VMI women celebrate their 1st Big South win

LEXINGTON -- Sophomore Alexa Bernas scored two goals, including what proved to be the game-winner Saturday, as VMI (7-8, 1-3 Big South) posted its first women's soccer victory in the Big South Conference with a 4-2 win over second-place High Point (8-5, 3-2).

Shenandoah 3, Ferrum 1

FERRUM -- The Panthers fell to 6-7-1 and 1-3 in the USA South with a loss to Shenandoah (8-5-1, 3-1).

Stephanie Perih scored the lone Ferrum goal.

Guilford 1, Roanoke 0

The Maroons (4-7-3, 2-6-1 ODAC) dropped their third straight match, falling to the visiting Quakers (8-5-2, 4-4) on a goal by Chelsea Glover.

UNCA 3, Radford 0

RADFORD -- The Bulldogs (8-3, 5-1 Big South) won their fourth game in a row by shutting out the Highlanders (5-10, 2-4).

Stephanie Feltis headed in a rebound for the only goal UNC Asheville would need in the 11th minute.

CROSS COUNTRY

VMI men, Mikels win

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Led by sophomore Donnie Mikels, who took top individual honors, the VMI men won the Winthrop Fall Classic.

The VMI women placed eighth out of 15 teams.

Nathan Johnson placed fourth out of 127 runners to lead the Washington and Lee men to a sixth-place finish. The W&L women were seventh.

Dawite Legesse placed seventh to lead the Radford men to a fifth-place finish. The Radford women placed 10th.

Roanoke men 10th

GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- The Roanoke men finished 10th at the 23-team Gettysburg College Invitational, while the Maroon women were 11th at the same event.

MEN'S SOCCER

Panthers set win mark

FERRUM -- Ferrum picked up two wins in as many days to improve to 10-5 on the season and set a school record for victories in a season.

The Panthers won 2-1 over Faulkner in Montgomery, Ala., on Friday as Daniel Lozano had a goal and an assist.

On Thursday, Ferrum defeated Warren Wilson in Asheville, N.C., 2-1 in double overtime Thursday. Lozano scored both goals.

The previous record for wins was nine in 1995.

BLACKSBURG -- Marcus Reed scored two goals for the No. 23 Hokies.

VMI 2, UNCA 1, OT

LEXINGTON -- Josh Hanna scored the game-winner in overtime as the Keydets (6-5-1) won their first Big South game of the season.

Salisbury 1, Roanoke 0

SALISBURY, Md. -- The No. 7 Sea Gulls (13-0-1) scored in the third minute on J.J. King's redirected shot for the victory over the Maroons (7-4).

Applegate finishes 6th

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Washington and Lee junior Emily Applegate finished sixth in the Division III singles draw at the ITA National Small College Championships.

Applegate (10-2) lost to Carrie Preston of Washington (Mo.) University 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in the fifth-place match.

Generals post shutout

LEXINGTON -- Louise Bance scored two goals to lead Washington and Lee (9-5) to the victory over Sewanee (6-5).
