UVa signs Nigerian

Virginia women's basketball coach Debbie Ryan has announced the signing of 6-foot-3 forward Aisha Mohammed, a native of Lagos, Nigeria.

Mohammed averaged 22 points and 11 rebounds as a sophomore at Central Arizona (Junior) College last season, earning JUCO All-American honors. She helped her team make the 2006 JUCO final four. She played for Nigeria in the 2004 Summer Olympics.

Generals honored

Rockbridge County graduate Amanda Strickler of Washington and Lee has been named the women's lacrosse small-college state player of the year by the sports information directors of Virginia colleges.

W&L's Jan Hathorn was named the state co-coach of the year with Averett's Katie Talbert.

Strickler, who had 26 goals and 41 assists, will play in the North-South Senior All-Star Game next month in Baltimore. She was joined on the all-state first team by W&L's Rachel Wallick and Sarah Tilbor.

The second team included W&L's Kate Lester, Magtgie Megear and Kat Michaels and Roanoke College's Kally Perkins.

Athletes recognized

A pair of wrestlers -- Virginia Tech's Mike Faust, who has a 3.4 GPA, and VMI's Tommy Cunningham -- were named to the Academic All-District at-large first team for Division I.

Tech swimmer Neil Savage, Virginia golfer Leah Wigger and VMI swimmer Bart Payne were second-team picks.

Washington and Lee tennis player Charles Anderson and W&L field hockey player Courtney Harrison made the first team for small-college athletes. W&L field hockey player Jane Beall made the second team.
