ACC alters tournament
Fanfare
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The ACC has changed the seeding procedures and format for this month's tournament in the wake of Duke's decision last week to cancel the rest of its men's lacrosse season.
The ACC also announced that no members of the Duke team will be considered for ACC postseason awards this year.
For seeding purposes only, the two ACC games that Duke did play were changed to no contests. Each team was seeded based on only two league games. The ACC also dropped one of the semifinal games.
Second-seeded Maryland will face third-seeded North Carolina on April 28 in Baltimore, with the winner facing top-seeded Virginia there on April 30.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Guard commits to Tech
Shamarr Bowden, a high-scoring junior from Grimsley High School in Greensboro, N.C., made two basketball commitments Monday.
Bowden, a 6-foot-3 guard, said he will play collegiately at Virginia Tech, but not before he spends two years at the Miller School outside Charlottesville. He will repeat his junior year there in 2006-07 and remain there in 2007-08.
Bowden, also offered a scholarship by William and Mary, did not need remedial academic work.
"I just wanted to get stronger," said Bowden, who averaged 21.4 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.4 rebounds this year. "I wanted this to get reclassified."
Bowden was recruited for Tech by Hokies assistants Ryan Odom and Stacey Palmore. Odom is friends with Miller School coach Fred Wawner.
"Virginia Tech was the first school to start recruiting me," Bowden said. "I'd visited up there so many times. I pretty much went to all of their games, so I knew their philosophy and style of play. It's where I felt the most comfortable."
UVa honors Staley
Virginia announced that Temple coach and former UVa basketball star Dawn Staley will receive the 2006 Distinguished Alumna Award that previously has gone to Katie Couric and other notable graduates.
