Hip surgery shelves UVa sophomore Singletary
On the eve of the ACC Tournament, Virginia basketball player Sean Singletary said he couldn't wait for a time when he had a full offseason to concentrate on his game, without regard for injury or other interruptions.
That won't be the case this year.
UVa announced Wednesday that Singletary underwent arthroscopic surgery March 30 to relieve the hip pain from which he had suffered since early in the season but caused him to miss only one game, a Dec. 7 home loss to Fordham.
According to the UVa news release, Singletary was injured Dec. 4 against Georgia Tech.
Rehabilitation will limit Singletary's participation in individual workouts and strength-and-conditioning work this spring, but he is expected to be close to 100 percent by the summer.
Singletary, a sophomore, was the first Cavalier to make first-team All-ACC since Bryant Stith in 1992.
Good move
Florida's ascension to the Division I men's basketball championship meant some camera time for Larry Shyatt, the former Clemson head coach who has served as a Gators' assistant for the past two seasons.
After sitting out the 2003-2004 season, Shyatt first interviewed with Pete Gillen at Virginia, then accepted an offer from Billy Donovan at Florida. Gillen hired John Fitzpatrick, who had been at Houston and then, a year later, Fitzpatrick and Gillen were out of a job at UVa.
It's been a rough go for Fitzpatrick, who went from UVa to Wright State, where the staff was not retained -- the third time that's happened to him in three years.
Shyatt has received considerable credit for the improvement in Florida's defense over the past two seasons and frequently can be seen conferring with Donovan during timeouts.
Women's hoops
Shirley McCall, a junior from Bassett High School, started all 31 games for James Madison (24-7) and averaged career highs of 12.1 points and 6.1 rebounds. McCall, who won the team's defensive award in 2004-2005, had a career-high 30 points at Hofstra. The Dukes, who lost in the first round of the women's NIT, did not have a senior on their roster.
n Junior Amy Childs from Alleghany High School and freshman Rebecca Henderson from Cave Spring each started 30 of 31 games for Bridgewater, which reached the third round of the women's NCAA tournament and finished 24-7. Henderson had a team-high 42 blocked shots and tied with Childs for second on the team in rebounding at 5.7 per game.
n Erin Hanson, a 6-foot sophomore from Blacksburg, was the leading scorer (15.3) and rebounder (7.4) for Roanoke College (13-13). Freshman Maria Migliarese from Hidden Valley was second on the team in rebounding and averaged 6.3 points in just over 17 minutes per game. Migliarese also plays No. 2 on the Roanoke women's tennis team behind basketball teammate Cindy McGraw from E.C. Glass.
Recruiting

Military Academy. Brown, an academic qualifier, rushed for more than 1,800 yards and scored 26 touchdowns as a senior.
Glenvar coach Lee Johnson reports that a pair of All-Region C players, quarterback Devin Chappell and center Daniel Ayers, have decided to play for Emory & Henry. Linebacker Cory Reynolds, an All-Three Rivers District pick, will play at Averett.
n The G&W Report out of State College, Pa., has rated Virginia Tech's football class 23rd in the country, the highest ranking Tech's recruits have received, and says that "some analysts believe the Hokies signed one of the top five defensive line classes in the country."
Virginia's recruiting class is ranked 42nd by G&W.
In the pros

They previously had played in Denver and Detroit, respectively. ... Published reports out of Minneapolis indicate that the Vikings are pursing ex-UVa quarterback and Atlanta backup Matt Schaub as a starter.
Timesland ties
William and Mary's Brenna Blevins, a junior from Pulaski, scored a school-record 5,013 points in winning the heptathlon at the Florida State relays. Blevins finished first in three of the seven events -- the javelin, 800-meter dash and shot put -- and met the provisional NCAA qualifying standard while becoming the first Tribe heptathlete to surpass 5,000 points.

Reports on the Virginia Wesleyan Website that the Marlins men's basketball team provided the Old Dominion Athletic Conference with its first Division III national team championship were off the mark.
Ex-Roanoke College tennis player John Gardner reports that one of the Maroons' rivals, Washington and Lee, won the 1988 Division III title in men's tennis. In addition, Guilford won 2002 and 2005 national championships in men's golf.
