In the region: Soccer opener success for Radford University

EMMITSBURG, Md. --Bernardo Ulmo scored on an 18-yard free kick in the 99th minute to give Radford (1-0) a season-opening 3-2 men's soccer win at Mt. St. Mary's (0-2) on Saturday.

The Highlanders jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the match, getting goals from Brian Gwanzura and Iyiola Awosika. After cutting the Radford lead to one in the 31st minute, Mount St. Mary's tied the score in the 49th minute.

Ulmo added an assist for the Highlanders, while Ryan Taylor made four saves.

Navy 5, VMI 0

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy (1-0) led 1-0 at halftime and scored four second half goals in a 5-0 win over visiting VMI (0-1) on Saturday evening.

Dave Arnold scored twice for Navy, which held a 20-7 advantage in shots.

Goalie Brian Sowell made five saves for the Keydets.

Roanoke 1, Methodist 0, OT

Michael Stark scored a goal with 25 seconds left in the second overtime period to give host Roanoke a win over Methodist in the championship match of the Roanoke Invitational.

The Maroons outshot the Monarchs 28-15 but were unable to score until the 110th minute. Roanoke goalie Avery Makel made seven saves.

Bluefield 1, Ferrum 0

FERRUM -- Ferrum (0-2) outshot Bluefield 17-10 but suffered the loss on Saturday.

Bluefield's Nago Mbengue scored a goal in the 39th minute. Chris Taylor (Northside) made five saves in goal for the Panthers.

Southern Virginia 3, Bridgewater 2, OT

BRIDGEWATER -- Tyler Laurent scored an unassisted goal with less than 3 minutes to play in the second overtime for Southern Virginia (3-0) in the win at Bridgewater (0-2).

Laurent finished with two goals for the Knights.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Randolph-Macon 1, Ferrum 0

ASHLAND -- Brittany Jones scored in the 37th minute for Randolph-Macon (1-1) in the Yellow Jackets' non-conference win over Ferrum (1-1). Katie Hodkinson made five saves for Ferrum.
