Tech, UVa wrestlers earn honors

OMAHA, Neb. -- Virginia Tech junior Chris Diaz became the seventh All-American in school history Friday when he beat second-seeded Jamal Parks of Oklahoma State, 7-3, at 141 pounds in the NCAA Wrestling Championships.

Diaz, who is seeded 11th, dropped his opening match, but then reeled off four straight wins to stay alive. Diaz is the only Hokie advancing to today's medal round.

Jarrod Garnett (125) fell to Ohio State's Nikko Triggas, 7-6, in the round of 12. Jesse Dong (157), who was seeded third, lost to Central Michigan's Steven Brown, 5-1, in the consolations.

Virginia junior Chris Henrich (174) advanced to the semifinals with a 5-4 win over sixth-seeded Mike Benefiel of Oklahoma State to clinch All-America honors for the second straight season. Henrich is the first two-time All-American in school history.

SWIMMING

Cavs 8th, Hokies 21st at women's NCAA meet

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Three Virginia swimmers earned All-America honors and Virginia Tech's 800 meter freestyle relay team finished 10th in the second day of the Women's NCAA Championships.

Senior Mei Christensen finished fourth and sophomore Lauren Smart was eighth in the 100 back, while freshman Lauren Perdue was eighth in the 200 free.

Tech sophomore Ericka Hajnal and freshman Katarina Filova broke school records to post top-20 finishes in the 400 IM and 200 free.

Virginia holds eighth place in the team standings with 110 points, while the Hokies are 21st with 26 points. Stanford leads with 266.5 points.

BASEBALL

Sullivan propels VMI past High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. -- Junior Graham Sullivan hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth to push VMI to a 5-4 win over High Point in each teams' Big South Conference opener Friday evening.

The win improves the 30th-ranked Keydets to 17-1, 1-0 Big South on the season, while the Panthers fall to 12-5, 0-1.

VMI sophomore Adam Lopez (3-0) allowed four runs, three earned, and struck out nine in 8.1 innings to earn the win.

Clemson 3, Virginia Tech 0

CLEMSON, S.C. -- Clemson pitchers Casey Harman and David Haselden combined for a one-hit shutout to leading the seventh-ranked Tigers (15-2, 4-0 ACC) to a conference victory over Virginia Tech.

The Tigers (15-2, 4-0 ACC) managed just four hits of their own against the Hokies (13-6, 2-2).

Tech first-baseman Austin Wates reached base four times without recording an official at bat. He walked twice and was hit by two pitches.

Rain is forecast for Sunday, so the teams will play a doubleheader today, with the first game at 2:30 p.m. and the second game to follow.

Radford 6, UNC Asheville 5, 12 inn.

RADFORD -- Matt Hillsinger's two-out triple in the 12th inning pushed across Brett Mollenhauer and extended Radford's winning streak to five as the Highlanders (8-7, 1-0 Big South) won the conference opener for both teams.

Hillsinger went 3-for-5, with four RBIs, including a two-run triple in the third. Reliever Josh Patten (2-1) worked two perfect innings to earn the win.

Virginia 7, Boston College 1

CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Starter Danny Hultzen (4-1) allowed just one run on three hits in eight innings as the top-ranked Cavaliers defeated the Eagles in the first game of an ACC weekend series.

Jarrett Parker and Phil Gosselin each had a pair of hits, and every starting position player recorded at least one hit for the Cavaliers (15-3, 3-1 ACC).

Starter Kevin Moran (1-3) worked 2.1 innings for BC (7-10, 1-3) and gave up six earned runs and eight hits.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Cortland 18, Roanoke 12

Kelly Radigan scored five goals and added two assists as the Red Dragons (2-0) used a 9-1 run in the second half to pull away.

Carolyn Miller and Gina Valles scored two goals each for the Maroons (2-4).

SOFTBALL

Ferrum sweeps E&H

FERRUM -- Rachel Shumaker went 2-for-4, with a double and three RBIs in the Panther's 10-0 victory in the first game and went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs in a 9-1 win in the nightcap.

Allyson Stevens picked up the complete game win for Ferrum (12-8) in Game 1, and Shelbie Hall was the winning pitcher in Game 2.

GOLF

Hokies tied for 12th

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Virginia Tech shot a 16-over-par 304 and is tied with Kennesaw State for 12th place after the first round of the 41st Annual Furman Intercollegiate, played at the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Course.

Chattanooga and Clemson are tied for the lead at one-over-par 289.

Tech freshman Jacob Everts, who is playing the event as an individual, shot an even-par 72 and is tied for ninth place after the first round.

UVa's Collins grabs individual 1st-round lead

STATESBORO, Ga. -- Virginia junior Will Collins shot 4-under 68 to grab the lead after the opening round of play at the 31st annual Schenkel E-Z-GO Invitational in Statesboro, Ga.

Collins' score helped No. 20 Virginia to an overall total of 2-under 286 that put the Cavaliers in second place. North Florida leads the 15-team field at 285.
