UVa's Perdue 5th in NCAAs

WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. -- Both the Virginia 400 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay picked up All-America honors as the first night of finals was held Thursday at the 2010 NCAA Championships at Purdue University.

Through six events, Virginia stands in eighth place with 64 points. Stanford currently leads the meet (142.5) followed by Georgia (134) and defending champion California (122).

The 200 free relay team of Mei Christensen, Katherine McDonnell, Lauren Smart and Lauren Perdue finished fifth in 3:33.28.

Perdue earned her first career individual All-America honors after a fifth-place finish in the 50 free, her second of three events on the night. The Greenville, N.C., native clocked a time of 22.27, just .01 off from her school record-setting prelim time of 22.26 she set Thursday morning.

Virginia's 200 free relay team of Christensen, Perdue, Kelly Flynn and Hannah Davis also earned All-America honors with an eighth-place showing. The Cavaliers finished in 1:29.51.

Four Virginia Tech women competed in the 50 and 500 freestyle races.

Erika Hajnal and Lauren Ritter posted top-30 finishes in the 500 freestyle, with Hajnal finishing 22nd with a time of 4:43.93. Ritter took 30th in 4:44.60, while Kelly deMarrais finished 55th in 4:49.51. Katarina Filova was the only Tech swimmer in the 50 freestyle, taking 41st in a personal-best 22.91. All four Hokies swimmers will compete today in the 800 freestyle relay. Hajnal will also swim in the 400 IM, while deMarrais, Ritter and Filova will swim in the 200 free.

MEN'S SWIMMING

Washnock competes

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Washington and Lee sophomore Chris Washnock finished 17th in the preliminary round of the men's 400IM in 4:03.43 at the Division III National Championships on Thursday.

He did not qualify for the final.

WRESTLING

Tech's Garrett, Dong advance

OMAHA, Neb. -- Virginia Tech's Jarrod Garrett (125) and Jesse Dong (157) each won two matches to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA wrestling championships

Garrett beat Wyoming's Michael Martinez, 5-2. Dong topped Michigan State's Anthony Jones, 5-4.

Tech's Tommy Spellman (184) and former Magna Vista Tony Gravely (125), now at Appalachian State, made the round of 16, but lost Thursday night.

SOFTBALL

Radford 8-7, Liberty 2-6

RADFORD -- The Highlanders scored eight unanswered runs in the opener and came from behind in the second game to earn a doubleheader sweep of Liberty (12-8, 0-2) to start Big South play.

Kristen Shifflett and Michelle Beall each homered and went 2-for-3 in the first game. Shifflett also drove in two, as did Hope Creasy.

In the second game, Radford scored two runs to take the lead in the fifth, and survived a bases-loaded jam in the seventh. Shannon Keefe drove in three runs and Sarah Himan, who had two hits in the first game, had two doubles in the second for Radford (9-8, 2-0 Big South).

Virginia 10, No. 10 La.-Lafayette 4

FULLERTON, Calif. -- Giannina Cipolloni and Sarah Racke each had two hits and two RBIs as Virginia (13-9) beat No. 10 Louisiana-Lafayette (15-8) in the Judi Garman Invitational.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Ferrum 24, Randolph 5

LYNCHBURG -- Cara Jacobs scored five goals and added four assists to lead Ferrum over Randolph.
