ACC honors Vasquez, Williams

Associated Press
Maryland's Greivis Vasquez (21) was named ACC player of the year, beating Duke's Jon Scheyer (30) for the honor.
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Greivis Vasquez is the Atlantic Coast Conference's player of the year.
The Maryland star on Tuesday won the league's top individual honor following a season in which he averaged nearly 20 points and helped lead the Terrapins to a share of the regular-season title.
Maryland coach Gary Williams was named the league's coach of the year.
Vasquez received 39 of a possible 53 votes by members of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association. Duke's Jon Scheyer received 12 votes and Virginia Tech's Malcolm Delaney had two.
Vasquez is the sixth Maryland player to win the award and the first since Juan Dixon in 2002. He was a unanimous selection to the all-ACC first team a day earlier.
Williams was an overwhelming choice to win the coaching award for the second time and first since 2002 -- when he won the national championship.
He received 42 of 53 votes. Duke's Mike Krzyzewski was second with eight votes.
Williams' Terrapins enter this week's ACC tournament in Greensboro as the league's hottest team.
They have won seven straight, hold the No. 2 seed and earned a share of the regular-season title with a 13-3 league record -- their best since going 15-1 during the national title season in 2001-02.
Georgia Tech's Derrick Favors was named rookie of the year. The 6-foot-10 freshman averaged 11.9 points and 8.4 rebounds this season to lead all league freshmen in scoring, rebounding, double-doubles, blocked shots and shooting percentage.
Florida State's Chris Singleton was named the defensive player of the year after leading the league in steals at 2.3 per game. He also averaged 1.5 blocks per game.
Teammate Solomon Alabi was had the second-highest vote total after leading the league with 2.3 blocks per game.
Ga. Tech AD withholding review on Hewitt
ATLANTA -- Georgia Tech athletic director Dan Radakovich says he will wait until the end of the season for "any discussion" on coach Paul Hewitt's status.
Georgia Tech finished a disappointing seventh in the Atlantic Coast Conference in the regular season and plays North Carolina on Thursday night in the ACC tournament in Greensboro, N.C.
Radakovich told The Associated Press Tuesday there is still "much to be gained" by the Yellow Jackets.
Hewitt's Yellow Jackets may need to win at least one game in the ACC tournament to earn a bid to the NCAA tournament.
Georgia Tech, 19-11 overall, finished 7-9 in the ACC. Hewitt has only one winning ACC record in 10 seasons, including five straight finishes of sixth or lower.
Boeheim, Johnson win top Big East awards
NEW YORK -- Jim Boeheim was voted Big East coach of the year Tuesday after perhaps the most masterful job of his Hall of Fame career, guiding a team that was unranked to begin the season to a conference regular-season championship.
Boeheim joined UConn coach Jim Calhoun as the only four-time winners. Former Georgetown coach John Thompson and former St. John's coach Lou Carnesecca each won the award three times.
Syracuse forward Wes Johnson was voted player of the year, giving a decidedly Orange flavor to the league's top individual honors. Johnson beat out Villanova senior Scottie Reynolds, West Virginia star Da'Sean Butler, former player of the year Luke Harangody of Notre Dame, and high-scoring forward Dominique Jones of South Florida.
Cincinnati guard Lance Stephenson was rookie of the year in balloting by the league's coaches.
MEN
No. 12 Butler 70, Wright St. 45
INDIANAPOLIS -- Shelvin Mack scored all 14 of his points in the first half, and Matt Howard had 14 points and nine rebounds to help No. 12 Butler rout second-seeded Wright State in the Horizon League title game Tuesday night.
Butler (28-4) extended the nation's longest winning streak to 20 and heads into NCAA play as the only Division I team to complete a perfect conference season.
The Raiders (20-12) were led by N'Gai Evans with 13 points.
St. John's 73, UConn 51
NEW YORK -- Sean Evans scored 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead St. John's to a 73-51 victory Tuesday over Connecticut, ending the Huskies' chance for an at-large bid into the NCAA tournament.
The Red Storm (17-14), who had lost three of four to close the regular season, took command right away against the reeling Huskies (17-15), who have lost four straight.
WOMEN
UConn wins Big East
HARTFORD, Conn. -- Kalana Greene scored 15 points to help top-ranked Connecticut rout No. 9 West Virginia 60-32 on Tuesday night for its 72nd straight win and 16th Big East tournament championship.
Greene made her first seven shots and grabbed 12 rebounds to earn most outstanding player honors for the tournament.
The Huskies (33-0) have won five of the last six conference tournament titles and enter the NCAAs unbeaten for the fifth time in school history. UConn went on to win the national championship in 1995, 2002, and 2009. In 1996-97 they lost to Tennessee in the regional final.
