VMI baseball keeps on rolling

LEXINGTON -- VMI's baseball team made it 10 in a row Sunday, claiming its third weekend sweep of the season with an 8-4 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore at Gray-Minor Stadium.

The Keydets' 10-0 start is not only its best ever, but it also marks the team's longest winning streak in at least 60 years.

Sam Roberts (2-0) allowed just one hit in seven innings, striking out six in the longest outing of his career.

Steele Myers and Alex Haisuka each had two hits for VMI.

Virginia Tech 12, Long Island 4

BLACKSBURG -- Buddy Sosnoskie and Ronnie Shaban each had three hits and Mathew Price tossed six scoreless innings as the Hokies (8-2) cruised past Long Island (1-7) to complete a four-game sweep.

Steve Domecus, Anthony Sosnoskie and Michael Seaborn added two hits apiece for Tech.

UVa wins pair

CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Phil Gosselin notched four of Virginia's 18 hits as the top-ranked Cavaliers defeated Dartmouth 11-5 in the first game of a doubleheader.

In the late game, Tyler Cannon went 3-for-5 with five RBIs to help the Cavs roll past Wright State 13-3.

Elon 7, Radford 6

ELON, N.C. -- Seth Canipe's walk-off two-run homer in the ninth inning completed a five-run rally and gave the Phoenix a win in the final game of the Elon Invitational,

The Highlanders (3-6), who had a 6-1 lead in the fourth inning, saw the Phoenix (7-4) rally with six unanswered runs, punctuated by Canipe's shot that cleared the left-field wall with one out in the ninth.

Christopher Newport 9, Ferrum 7, 10 innings

FERRUM -- Shannon Mark doubled to left field to drive in the winning run in the top of the 10th inning to lift the Captains.

UVa wins tourney

CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Virginia shut out Columbia 8-0 and Delaware State 9-0 to win the Cavalier Classic.

The Cavaliers won all four games in the round-robin tournament.

Freshman Melanie Mitchell tossed a complete game in the win over the Lions, allowing just two hits in five innings. Nicole Koren struck out four in a complete-game effort against Delaware State.

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Leigh Rowan hit a two-runner homer in the first inning to lead the Tigers in the USF Under Armour Invitational.

Roanoke sweeps twinbill

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Roanoke swept a doubleheader against Meredith by scores of 7-2 and 3-1, ending an eight-game winning streak for the Avenging Angels (7-5).

The Maroons improved to 7-1.

CLEARWATER, Fla. Central Michigan (4-6) scored three two-out runs in the first inning and held on to beat the Highlanders (4-6).
