Roanoke fails to slow Captains
Unbeaten Christopher Newport eliminates the Maroons after a 21-0 run in the first half.
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- It was a Long night but Roanoke College came up woefully short in its bid to make its second trip to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA women's basketball tournament.
Despite a career-high 28 points by senior guard Caitlyn Long, the Maroons got scant contributions from the rest of the cast and got dumped 72-48 by unbeaten Christopher Newport in the second round Saturday night.
Twenty-four hours after producing a season-high shooting performance that included 11 3-pointers in a first-round win over McDaniel, the Maroons made only 19 of 78 field-goal attempts and saw their season end at 24-4.
''It cost us and here we go ... we're going home,'' Roanoke coach Susan Dunagan said.
It was a great game for 6 12 minutes. After a couple of 3-pointers by Long, Roanoke led 14-13 and it appeared the Lady Captains 30-0 were in for a rare competitive game. Then, the Maroons went as dry as the Mojave, missing 23 consecutive shots from the floor in the next 10 12 minutes. Meanwhile, the faster and more athletic hosts feasted, embarking on a killer 21-0 spurt that gave them a 20-point bulge. Roanoke never recovered from the haymaker run.
''It was a long streak there,'' said Long, who made all five of Roanoke's 3-pointers and scored nine of Roanoke's 19 field goals. ''We were getting to the rim and getting shots. We were just flying, rushing way too much and not taking our time.''
Center Jordan Gholson, coming off a season-high 22 points Friday, was 0-for-9 from the field in the first half, many coming from point-blank range. The junior finished 3-for-15 for the night, scoring only six points.
''We had shots; we had the opportunities, but we just couldn't finish," Dunagan said. "We just got totally out of synch. We'd miss a shot, and by that time everybody is down the floor, 'where are they?' We had that spurt where we just went numb.
''You've got to be able to keep your composure. When those things happen, we've just got to play through it. And I think it got to us, our confidence starting going and they just kept hitting and running and bumping. A lot of times we didn't make good decisions.''
While Roanoke held All-American Chelsie Schweers to 5-for-19 shooting and 18 points, almost seven points below her average, it had no answer for Alysa Kerr. The sophomore guard, who entered the night averaging a modest 6.4 points, was 8-for-11 from the field and finished with a career-high 24 points.
''We knew we needed to use our athletic ability and speed against this team,'' CNU coach Carolyn Hunter said. ''Defense was the biggest key for us in that run. And during that time, their psyche or mental state, we had them kind of thinking and questioning themselves. Then, we knew we needed to shut the door.''
Matters would have even been worse for Roanoke if not for Long, who scored 58 percent of her club's points in her final college game.
''I had nothing to lose ... might as well keep shooting it,'' Long said. ''And I was making it so. It's bad enough to lose because it was my last game and I didn't want to go out with nothing, I wanted to keep fighting and there was nothing else we could do.''
