Bruins golfer Mondy to play at Auburn
Jake Mondy, an integral part of a Blacksburg High team that captured Group AA titles in 2007 and '08, verbally committed to play his college golf at Auburn on Tuesday.
Mondy, a 17-year-old junior, also had scholarship offers from Virginia, Virginia Tech, Louisville and Virginia Commonwealth. Mondy was familiar with first-year Tigers coach Nick Clinard, who was hired after leading Central Florida to a top-10 finish in last year's NCAA championship.
''I went to Auburn twice on visits and loved everything about the place,'' said Mondy, who finished third in last July's VSGA Junior championship and last October's Group AA championship. "[Clinard] had been interested in me coming to Central Florida, and when he was hired by Auburn he wanted me to become part of their program there."
"I went down there last November for a football game against Alabama and it was an unbelievable setting. And they have a very solid program and it's going to be nice to be in the warmer weather. Of course, they have like 4 12 inches of snow down there now, but that's a lot better than the foot and a half we get around here."
Mondy is the second member of Blacksburg's powerhouse program to recently solidify his college plans. Senior Michael Bekken has announced plans to walk on at William and Mary this fall. Former Bruins standouts Lanto Griffin and Courtney Ellenbogen (Duke) also received scholarships to Division I programs.
''It's nice to get this over with because it's become like a second job,'' he said. "Also, it's nice to pay back my parents, who have been taking me to golf tournaments all over the place for all these years."
