Maroons' slide continues in loss to Yellow Jackets

Roanoke has now lost six straight games and sits 3-9 in the ODAC with four games to play.

There was some discussion Wednesday night at the Bast Center about another snowstorm rolling into the area.

Well, don't mention it to the Roanoke College men's basketball team. Hey, this bunch has been mired in a havoc-wreaking storm of its own for the past seven weeks now.

Extending the longest stretch of nonsuccess in head coach Page Moir's 21 seasons at the helm, the Maroons lost for the 13th time in 15 games Wednesday, getting drilled by 19th-ranked Randolph-Macon 86-53.

"Forget about this system coming in. ... The weather needs to improve around here," said senior forward Kendrick Chittock, sitting in a quiet home locker room. "It's just tough because this program is used to too much success. Especially me, I've been here for four years. ... The three [previous] years I've been here we've been within one or two games of the NCAA tournament. We've just got to remember that.

"We're not playing well. We've got to have pride, especially at home. This is where we go to work every day, this is where people come to see us play, and we've got to give them more than that. We're playing for more than just this team, we're playing for the school, the community, and I think we need to use that as a little motivation for us."

Certainly, the Maroons (6-15, 3-9 ODAC) need something. The loss was the season-high sixth straight for a club that had earlier dropped five in a row to ignite a bad run that has seen them fall from 4-2 to the dark side of the hoops' moon.

Roanoke, which is headed towards only its third losing season under Moir, now has a week off to try and regroup before playing its final four games of the regular season. Then comes the Feb. 25-28 ODAC tournament at the Salem Civic Center.

At this point, the Maroons just need to win a game, period.

"One is a start for us and I think we move from there," Chittock said. "We've got a week to prepare for the next game and it's time for us to buckle down even more. Coach is staying positive. He knows the kind of talent we have in the room. It's way better than the sum of how we've been playing."

To think, there was a lot of preseason publicity about Moir passing the late Emory & Henry coach Bob Johnson's record of 230 ODAC wins. With only three league wins, the Maroons now need to win three of their final four regular-season games for Moir to break the record.

"Coach takes a lot of responsibility on himself," Chittock said. "He feels responsible for this team and our success, and we've got to help him out. He's working as hard as anybody to try new things and try to get us to do the details and fundamentals. That's something that I personally want to get for him, and I know that this team wants to do the same thing."

The Yellow Jackets (16-4, 7-4), who started the season 13-0 and vaulted to No. 1 in the D3hoops.com Top 25, needed little time to push the hosts over the cliff.

Macon scored 15 of the first 19 points and never led by less than double digits the rest of the way in breaking a two-game skid. Macon shot 53 percent from the field, compared to 33 percent for Roanoke. The visitors outrebounded the hosts 48-23.

Brandon Braxton, who at 6-foot-9 towers over any player that Moir can put on the floor, had a game-high 20 points and seven rebounds for the Jackets.

On a night in which Moir used every one of his players in hopes of finding answers, the Maroons didn't have a single player score in double figures. Salem's Melvin Felix and freshman Kwasi Amponsah each had eight points.

"I want something good to happen for these guys. They've worked pretty hard and I know they can do better," Moir said.

"I'm pulling my last few hairs out trying to figure out what we can do to make this work down the stretch. It's not over yet."
