Highlanders muscle inside, past Keydets

LEXINGTON -- Cameron Hall belonged to the biggest man in the house Thursday night.

Turning a Big South matchup between Radford and host VMI into his personal rodeo, mammoth Art Parakhouski rode roughshod over the hosts, scoring 30 points and collecting a school-record 22 rebounds as the Highlanders rolled to an 111-84 romp.

Parakhouski, a 6-foot-11, 260-pound senior from Belarus, was 13-for-17 from the field as Radford buried the smaller Keydets in paint scoring (58-24) and on the backboards (62-36). The Highlanders shot 57.9 percent from the field (44-of-76) and 56.3 percent from 3-point range.

Something about VMI makes the hoop look bigger to Radford. Thirteen days ago at Dedmon Center, the Highlanders shot 57.7 percent and 50 percent from downtown in a 109-91 rout of the Keydets.

"We help their stats, don't we?" said VMI coach Duggar Baucom, started the game in a sagging 2-3 zone to try to slow down Parakhouski.

"We thought we go 2-3 zone tonight and make them shoot the ball from outside.

"It's pick your poison and we picked the wrong one. In fact, we picked our poison each half and neither one of them worked."

It's not like Parakhouski didn't have some help, too. Junior forward Laz Trifunovic had 27 points and 12 rebounds, and senior forward Joey Lynch-Flohr had 13 points and 13 rebounds. The same trio had triple-doubles against VMI in the first meeting, too. Trifunovic's 27 points matched his career high, which came against the Keydets on Jan. 21.

"We have a lot of inside scoring ability and they don't have lot of big guys to hang around the paint so," Radford coach Brad Greenberg said. "We did a good job of generating good shots and making them the first half."

Radford (12-10, 8-4 Big South) led 55-44 at intermission. The visitors then opened second half by hitting six of their first 10 shots, including a pair of 3s, to quickly push the lead to 18.

The Keydets never got closer than 14 again in losing their eighth league game in nine outings to fall to 7-13, 2-8 in the conference.

VMI played without sophomore guard Keith Gabriel, their leading scorer (17.4 ppg) entering the night. Gabriel sat out for a team disciplinary suspension, Baucom said.

"[Gabriel] let his teammates down," Baucom said. "So we have to teach him a lesson. It's got to more important to him so ... ."

VMI trails eighth-place Gardner-Webb by one game in the battle for the final spot in the Big South tournament next week.

"We're just trying to figure out how to win a game right now," said Baucom, whose club plays host to Presbyterian on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Highlanders, the top-heavy pick to repeat in the Big South, are done with any more long bus rides. Radford plays six of its final seven regular-season games, including five of six in the league, at home.

"I'm glad of that," Parakhouski said. "I'm tired of the bus. Seems like we've been on a bus for a couple of weeks. Then in Asheville [N.C.] last weekend, the electricity and power went out and there was no heat in the hotel. It was freezing as hell in there."

Greenberg got a laugh when told the big man's travelogue comments.

"Does he expect a limo or what?" Greenberg cracked. "This isn't like the Wilt Chamberlain or Bill Russell days, where a special car picks them up at the airport. But he's a big dude and he's not the most comfortable traveler in a bus for a long time. He's a big, strong guy who has been a remarkable player for us, and we're lucky to have him."
