Radford shut out of television slot

Radford was relegated to a non-televised "BracketBusters" game Monday, and was assigned a home game against UNC Wilmington.
The Seahawks -- who are doing so poorly that Benny Moss lost his head-coaching job last week -- will visit Radford (11-10, 7-4) on Saturday, Feb. 20 at a time to be announced.
Some of the 11 TV games announced Monday include: Old Dominion at No. 24 Northern Iowa, Feb. 19 on ESPN2; William and Mary at Iona, Feb. 19 on ESPNU; Akron at Virginia Commonwealth, Feb. 20 on ESPNU; the College of Charleston at George Mason, Feb. 20 on ESPN2; and Siena at No. 23 Butler, Feb. 20 on ESPN2.
The marquee "BracketBusters" games can give some teams from lower-profile leagues a chance to improve their NCAA tournament resumes with a quality nonleague game.
ESPN officials made the pairings for the 11 games they will air on ESPN2 or ESPNU. A panel of conference commissioners, including Kyle Kallender of the Big South, then made the pairings for the other 38 games.
Big South member Liberty got a TV game last year, when Seth Curry was the team's star. But none of the league's four representatives this year -- Radford, Winthrop, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian -- was deemed worthy of a TV game.
Kallender said the league record of the defending Big South champion Highlanders ruined their TV chances.
"Radford had a shot because they were a top-100 [RPI] team for quite awhile. They've been struggling a little bit lately," Kallender said Monday. "If they had not lost in conference, I think they would've been up there fighting for a [TV] spot. Obviously, an upset in the nonconference play would certainly have helped, ... but going into league play they were still a top-100 team."
Kallender said Radford, which is down to No. 179 in the RPI, was paired with UNCW chiefly for geographic reasons. UNCW will be able to make the trip by bus.
UNCW is 7-15, 3-8 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Seahawks threw a scare into Virginia on Jan. 18 before losing 69-67.
The 98 "BracketBusters" teams were chosen by their respective league offices last summer, when Radford was awarded a home game. But the pairings weren't made until last weekend.
Kallender picked the teams for the four Big South slots last summer. Radford coach Brad Greenberg wasn't interested in being considered two summers ago, but Kallender wanted RU to be part of "BracketBusters" this season because it was the defending league champ. This will be Radford's first "BracketBusters" game.
Radford is now obligated to return the visit to UNCW in a non-"BracketBusters" game in one of the next few seasons.

Landesberg honored
Virginia sophomore guard Sylven Landesberg was named ACC player of the week, the second time this season he's earned the award.
Landesberg scored 47 points and snared nine rebounds in games against Virginia Tech and North Carolina.
Kansas back at No. 1
After three weeks of not being No. 1, Kansas moved back to the top of The Associated Press' poll.
The Jayhawks (20-1) were No. 1 in the preseason Top 25 and for the first eight weeks of the regular season. They moved back into the top spot Monday, receiving 54 first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel.
The other three Division I teams with just one loss -- Villanova, Syracuse and Kentucky -- were second through fourth.
W.Va. frosh Kilicli to debut against Pitt
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The painful wait is over for West Virginia freshman Deniz Kilicli.
Benched for the first 20 games of the season for an NCAA rules violation, Kilicli is hoping to give the Mountaineers' inside game a late-season boost. The 6-foot-9 Kilicli is expected to make his debut on Wednesday night when No. 6 West Virginia hosts No. 22 Pittsburgh.
