Roanoke Maroons, Ferrum fall

Roanoke College will play the Panthers for third place in the Morris Cregger Invitational.

The Roanoke College men's basketball team went 0-2 in Case Western Reserve's tournament last week, but at least the Maroons got to visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during their trip to Cleveland.

The Maroons won't win a title this weekend, either. And this time there won't be any sightseeing to at least make the tournament memorable.

Ohio Wesleyan squashed Roanoke 74-55 in the first round of the Morris Cregger Invitational at the Bast Center in Salem.

Ohio teams went 2-0 on Saturday. Ferrum, minus its two best players, lost to Defiance 87-85 in the other first-round game.

Ferrum (5-6) and Roanoke will meet in the consolation game at 3 p.m. today. The Maroons have beaten Ferrum 12 straight times.

The title game will be at 1 p.m.

The Maroons have lost four straight games, including a Dec. 13 loss to Division I Radford.

Coach Page Moir and his charges are surprised to be just 4-6 on the season.

"This team's capable of way more," said Kendrick Chittock, who had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Tim Brady had 25 points for Ohio Wesleyan (3-7), which led the entire second half.

"They played with more pride and heart than we did," Roanoke guard Parrish Walker said.

The Battling Bishops shot 51.7 percent from the field in that half.

"They kicked our butt on the boards and they pushed the ball up the floor and got too many easy shots in transition," Moir said. "We were playing reactionary defense instead of tough, hard-nosed, aggressive defense.

"Our defense has really got to get shored up."

The Battling Bishops outrebounded Roanoke 44-36.

"They worked harder than we did," Chittock said. "They went out there and played us more physically. We've got to step up and be that strong. ... It starts on the boards. We play good 'D' for 20, 30 seconds and they get putbacks."

Hidden Valley graduate Logan Singleton had 13 points for Roanoke, which shot 38.3 percent from the field. The Maroons shot 19 percent from 3-point range.

Ferrum played its second straight game without All-USA South forward Derek Mitchell, who leads the team in scoring (17.9 ppg) and rebounding (13 rpg). Mitchell, the leading rebounder in school history, did not return from Christmas break because of an illness in his family.

The Panthers also were minus Mitchell in Wednesday's loss at Washington and Lee. Coach Bill Tharp, whose team was outrebounded 51-42 on Saturday, doesn't know when he will rejoin the squad.

Ferrum has played all season without All-USA South guard Keith Crump, who was diagnosed with a severe case of mononucleosis a few days before the team's opener.

"It was real bad news, real tough for me," said Crump, who averaged a team-high 15.6 points as a junior last season.

Crump has not been cleared to return to play, so he will wait until next season to return to the court so he can use his entire final season of eligibility.

Defiance (10-2) led 66-45 with 12:06 to go, but Ferrum sank six 3-pointers to climb back in the game.

"Coach told us not to give up," said Franklin County graduate Jerrell Wade, who had 25 points. "We started knocking down some big shots."

Jefferson Forest graduate Garry Brandt, starting in Mitchell's place, made a basket and free throw to cut the deficit to 82-79 with 35.8 seconds left. He finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

With his team down 83-79, Ferrum's Daryl Hart (25 points) missed a 3-pointer. But on the following possession, Hart made his fifth 3-pointer of the half to cut the lead to 85-82 with 5.3 seconds left.

After Defiance's Mike Floyd missed two free throws, Ferrum's Henry Hall got his hands on the rebound but could not hang on to the ball. Floyd (17 points) came up with the loose ball and made two free throws with 1.3 seconds left.

Wade banked in a 3-pointer from beyond half court at the buzzer.

Moir and Tharp each was hit with a technical foul during the doubleheader.
