Trio of Keydets earn top accolades

VMI's George Handler, Marc Ray and Tim Maypray were named to the All-Big South first team, the league announced on Tuesday.

Four Keydets made the league's second team, including running back Howard Abegesah, defensive lineman Josh Wine, linebacker Emilio Calvin and defensive back Byron Allen.

Liberty receiver and quarterback Mike Brown was named the offensive player of the year. Stony Brook linebacker Tyler Santucci was the defensive player of the year and Seawolves' coach Chuck Priore was named coach of the year.

Handler, a fifth-year senior offensive lineman, was also named to the all-academic team. He has a 3.054 GPA in mechanical engineering.

Handler, a four-year starter, was forced to split time between center and guard this season because of injuries. The Keydets led Division 1-AA with 276.6 rushing yards per game.

Ray, a redshirt freshman, led the Big South in punting with an average of 38.9 yards per punt.

Maypray, a senior and the preseason offensive player of the year, made the first team as a punt returner, averaging a league-best 12.9 yards per return. This is the third year Maypray has made the all-conference team, earning honors as kick returner and receiver in 2007 and as quarterback in 2008.

W&L gets forfeit win

Washington and Lee announced that Greensboro College has forfeited its September win over the Generals.

The forfeit means W&L winds up with a 4-6 record. Greensboro beat W&L 26-20.

According to W&L, the NCAA told Greensboro it must forfeit wins over Guilford and W&L because it used an ineligible player.

ODAC players honored

Washington and Lee offensive lineman Greg Kurkis, who has a 4.0 GPA, picked up two big honors Tuesday when he was named a second-team Academic All-American and the ODAC scholar-athlete of the year.

W&L was represented on the All-ODAC first team Tuesday by offensive lineman Charlie Craigle, defensive lineman Matt Cassilly (65 tackles, 10 sacks) and defensive back Donovan Sawyer (77 tackles, five interceptions).

Hampden-Sydney linebacker Andrew Sellers (Cave Spring), Randolph-Macon place-kicker Josh Storm (Jefferson Forest), Emory & Henry offensive lineman James Hairston (Martinsville) and E&H punter T.J. Frazier (William Byrd) also made the first team.

W&L running back Jonathan Clemo (Salem) made the second team after rushing for 923 yards. Kurkis and W&L linebacker Rob Look also made the second team.

Emory & Henry running back Caleb Jennings was voted the offensive player of the year, while Hampden-Sydney defensive lineman Will Riggenbach was chosen the defensive player of the year. Hampden-Sydney's Marty Favret was chosen coach of the year, and Guilford offensive lineman Daniel Biggerstaff was named rookie of the year.

Kelly says talk about jobs is not a problem

CINCINNATI -- Coach Brian Kelly is so accustomed to hearing rumors about him leaving Cincinnati that he pays little attention to what he calls the "silly season" of college football. Kelly said the speculation he will be up for other coaching jobs doesn't affect his undefeated team or its recruiting. The fifth-ranked Bearcats (10-0) are fifth in the BCS standings heading into their final home game Friday.
