Johns Hopkins eliminates Tigers

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY -- Johns Hopkins controlled possession of the ball for more than 26 minutes in the second half and eliminated Hampden-Sydney 23-7 in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.

The Blue Jays (9-2) will face Thomas More next Saturday.

With the game tied at 7-7 at halftime, Johns Hopkins took the lead for good when Alex Lachman kicked a 23-yard field goal with 14:16 to play after a long drive.

Hopkins added two more field goals and 1-yard touchdown run by Andrew Kase in the fourth quarter.

Corey Sedlar threw for 170 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions on 16-of-37 passing. Sean Cavanaugh caught five passes for 92 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Andrew Sellers (Cave Spring) tallied a game-high 15 tackles, including three for loss, for the Tigers (10-1).

Johns Hopkins' Hewitt Tomlin was 26-of-39 for 265 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Dan Crowley had career highs with 13 receptions and 178 yards. Kase finished with 109 yards and a touchdown on 38 carries.

Stony Brook 36, Liberty 33

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Jordan Gush caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Michael Coulter with 30 seconds remaining to lead Stony Brook to a victory over Liberty and a share of the Big South title.

Coulter set up the touchdown pass with a 64-yard completion to Gush, who finished with three catches for 88 yards.

Stony Brook's winning touchdown came just 25 seconds after Liberty took a 33-29 lead on Tommy Beecher's 7-yard pass to Dominique Jones with 55 seconds left in the game.

Edwin Gowins rushed for 165 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries for the Seawolves (6-5, 5-1), who won three of their final four games. Conte Cuttino added 89 yards and a score on 21 carries.

Beecher was 24 of 38 for 220 yards and two touchdowns for the Flames (8-3, 5-1).

Liberty's Mike Brown rushed for 99 yards on seven carries, including a 70-yard touchdown run.

Richmond 13, William & Mary 10

RICHMOND -- Andrew Howard's 48-yard field goal as time ran out lifted Richmond to a win over William and Mary and a share of the Colonial Athletic Association championship.

The Spiders (10-1, 7-1 CAA) won their fifth straight over the Tribe (9-2, 6-2), matching their longest streak in the 119-game series.

The Tribe was at Richmond's 39 when Justin Rogers intercepted a pass. He returned it to the Richmond 47 with 14 seconds left.

Eric Ward completed two passes, moving the ball to the 31 with 2 seconds left, setting the stage for Richmond.

JMU 43, Towson 12

HARRISONBURG -- Justin Thorpe threw three touchdown passes to lead James Madison to a win over Towson in the season finale for both teams.

Thorpe was 14-for-21 with 259 yards and three interceptions for the Dukes (6-5, 4-4 CAA). Scott Noble rushed for 106 yards on 23 carries.

The Dukes went up 17-0 in the opening quarter thanks in part to Thorpe's 52-yard TD pass to Rockeed McCarter and Arthur Moats' 68-yard fumble return for a score.

Norfolk St. 28, Winston-Salem 21

NORFOLK -- Dennis Brown threw a 61-yard touchdown pass to Chris Bell with 1:26 left in the third quarter, and Norfolk State held on for a win over Winston-Salem in the season finale for both teams.

The Spartans (6-4) broke a 14-14 tie on DeAngelo Branche's 19-yard touchdown run less than a minute into the third.

But Jean Julmiste's 12-yard touchdown pass to Omar Kizzie pulled the Rams (1-9) even at 21 with 7:44 left in the third, setting up Brown's game-winning TD pass.

Morgan State 16, Hampton 13

HAMPTON -- Domanick West ran for two touchdowns as Morgan State defeated Hampton in the season finale for both teams.

West's second score, from 1 yard out with 5:16 remaining, enabled the Bears (6-5, 4-4 MEAC) to erase a 13-10 Hampton lead.

The Pirates (5-6, 3-5) had come back from a 10-0 halftime deficit on touchdown passes by David Legree of 90 yards to Isiah Thomas and 15 yards to Darius Mullen.

West gained 40 yards on 10 carries and Devan James had 53 on 17 carries for the Bears.
