LEXINGTON -- Nick Gore scored 20 points and Andrew Sparks added 19 as VMI defeated West Virginia Wesleyan 111-92 on Wednesday night.

The Keydets (2-1), coming off a 103-59 loss to Richmond, shot only 34.5 percent for the game (40 for 116) and 25.4 percent from 3-point range (16 for 63), a school record for 3-point attempts.

"It was kind of a funky game," VMI coach Duggar Baucom said. "We had starters over there with two fouls in the first half. We had Ron Burks and Stan Okoye play a combined seven minutes in the first half. We had some guys who don't play much have to come in and sustain and they played pretty well.

"We just shot the ball so poorly in the first half, 17 percent from 3-point range. We didn't shoot it very well for the game, but we shot it well enough to win."

The Bobcats (0-2), a Division II team, shot 43.4 percent (33 for 76) and were 2-for-10 from beyond the arc.

VMI, which defeated West Virginia Wesleyan 135-81 on Nov. 14, 2007, is now 16-0 against non-Division I teams under Baucom.

The Keydets never trailed and led 107-77 with 5:16 left.

Justin Caldwell led the Bobcats with 25 points. Keshawn Creighton added 20 and 15 rebounds, and Ryan Hoehner had 10 points and 18 rebounds.

West Virginia Wesleyan outrebounded VMI 72-64, but committed 27 turnovers.

MEN

Randolph 65, Ferrum 61

FERRUM -- Randolph (2-0) defeated Ferrum in non-conference men's basketball game. Malcolm Nelson led the Wildcats with 14 points on 4-for-9 shooting. Derrick Woods-Morrow added 13 points and eight rebounds for Randolph.

Derek Mitchell got 27 points and 12 rebounds for the Panthers (0-2), his second double-double in as many games this season. Mitchell shot 10-for-15 from the floor and was 7-for-11 from the foul line.

FSU 80, Stetson 38

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Deividas Dulkys led four Florida State players in double-figure scoring with 13 points in a rout of Stetson.

The Seminoles (2-0) held the Hatters (1-2) to just three first-half field goals and used a balanced scoring attack to enter halftime with a 36-point lead. FSU held Stetson without a field goal for the final 11:37 of the first half.

Stetson finally ended its scoreless drought with Mark Lohuis' 3-pointer with 16:31 left in the game, but FSU led by as many as 49.

Florida State's defense dominated, blocking 10 shots, forcing 17 turnovers and holding Stetson to 27.5 percent shooting.

Chris Singleton scored 12 points for FSU, and Xavier Gibson and Ryan Reid each scored 11.

Tyshawn Patterson led Stetson with a game-high 15.

Wake Forest 83, High Point 60

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Al-Farouq Aminu had 22 points and 10 rebounds to help Wake Forest pull away early in the second half and beat High Point.

Ishmael Smith added 13 points for the Demon Deacons (3-0), who trailed almost the entire first half before finally pushing ahead by three at the break. But Wake Forest scored the first seven points after halftime to finally get some separation from the pesky Panthers (1-1), then steadily increased the margin down the stretch.

That's not to say it was all easy for Wake Forest, which was facing a team picked to finish sixth in the Big South Conference. In fact, High Point led by nine points midway through the first half while Wake Forest didn't take its first lead until just 2 minutes remained before halftime.

Nick Barbour scored 15 points to lead High Point.

No. 11 Butler 67, Northwestern 54

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Shelvin Mack had 15 points, Gordon Hayward added 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Butler showed off its depth with a victory over Northwestern.

Five players had nine points or better for the Bulldogs (2-0), who never trailed in beating Northwestern (1-1) for a second straight year. Mack also dished out eight assists.

Michael Thompson scored 16 and John Shurna 14 for short-handed Northwestern. This was the Wildcats' first game since announcing that both Kevin Coble, their leading scorer and rebounder the last three seasons, and Jeff Ryan will miss the rest of the season.

Coble broke a bone in his left foot during practice Nov. 10, and Ryan tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee three days later during Northwestern's season opener.

Butler had to rally from 12 points down to beat Northwestern last year at Hinkle Fieldhouse, but there was no such scare this time around.

The Bulldogs return everyone from the team that made its third straight trip to the NCAA tournament last season, and they were just too deep for Northwestern to handle.

WOMEN

No. 12 Virginia 110, S. Carolina Upstate 63

CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Chelsea Shine had a career-high 27 points and 11 rebounds to lead Virginia to a victory over South Carolina Upstate.

The sophomore forward, celebrating her 20th birthday, shot 10-for-13 from the field. Monica Wright and Simone Egwu added 19 points each to help the Cavaliers (3-0) to their highest scoring output in nine years.

Virginia's Debbie Ryan coached her 1,000th game, improving to 702-298.

Chelsea McMillan scored 14 points to lead SC Upstate (2-1), which was 8-for-34 on 3-pointers. Courtney Hawkins had 13 points and Lesley Daniel added 11.

The Cavaliers held a distinctive size advantage and it showed as they outrebounded S.C. Upstate 64-35 and scored 58 points in the paint.
