College basketball: Hollins ends losing streak

Hollins University hadn't been on the winning side of a basketball game since Jan., 2007, a span of 63 games.

But that streak ended with Hollins' 78-74 win over Gallaudet (0-1) on Sunday.

Tamara Phillips hit five 3-pointers and totaled 23 points and first-year guard Jasmine Greene scored 31 in her debut to help Hollins (1-0) to the victory.

Hollins lost the last 14 games of 2006-07 and went a combined 0-49 the last two seasons.

Brittany Payne led Gallaudet with 18 points.

WOMEN

No. 14 Virginia 86, Manhattan 68

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Monica Wright made her final 10 shots from the field and scored 25 of her game-high 31 points in the second half to lift Virginia past Manhattan.

The Cavaliers (2-0) forced 15 turnovers and held Manhattan scoreless for almost 6 minutes in taking a 40-23 halftime lead.

Virginia outscored the Jaspers (1-1) 30-13 over the final 14:11 of the first half.

W&M 70, Radford 40

WILLIAMSBURG -- Kymesha Alston notched a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds in the loss for the Highlanders (0-1).

MEN

W&L 67, Greensboro 55

LEXINGTON -- Ben Goetsch scored 29 points to lead Washington and Lee (1-0) to a win over Greensboro.

Lynchburg 77, Ferrum 57

LYNCHBURG -- Derek Mitchell had 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead Ferrum (0-1) while Steven Echols had 25 points and eight steals for Lynchburg (1-0).

Roanoke 73, CNU 72

Matt Crizer hit five 3-pointers and tallied 21 points to lead the Maroons (1-0) past the Captains (0-1). Kendrick Chittock and Logan Singleton scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.

No. 6 North Carolina 88, Valparaiso 77

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Deon Thompson scored 16 of his 20 points after halftime to lead North Carolina.

Ed Davis added a career-high 16 points for the Tar Heels (3-0), who didn't look sharp yet still earned their third straight double-digit victory to open the season. North Carolina led just 38-31 at halftime, but scored on 12 of 13 possessions to build a 24-point lead midway through the second half.

The Crusaders (0-2) got as close as 84-75 on a 3-pointer from Brandon McPherson with 1:47 left.

Wake Forest 89, East Carolina 58

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Al-Farouq Aminu scored 23 points, fellow sophomore Tony Woods matched a career high with 12 and Wake Forest routed East Carolina.

Ishmael Smith scored 14 points for the Demon Deacons (2-0).

Brock Young had 17 points, Darrius Morrow scored 12 and Chad Wynn added 11 for the Pirates (1-1).

No. 3 Texas 89, UC Irvine 42

AUSTIN, Texas -- Damion James had 21 points and 15 rebounds to lead Texas to a season-opening victory over UC-Irvine.

Dexter Pittman added 21 points for the Longhorns (1-0).

Zack Atkinson scored 10 points to lead UC-Irvine (1-1).

No. 8 West Virginia 83, Loyola, Md. 60

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Da'Sean Butler scored 26 points and West Virginia used two second-half runs to pull away.

Darrell Bryant added 15 points, Kevin Jones scored 14 and Casey Mitchell had 13 for West Virginia (1-0), which opened the season with three players out of the lineup. Among them was starting forward Devin Ebanks, who wasn't on the bench and missed the game for undisclosed reasons.

Shane Walker scored 14 points and Jamal Barney had 11 for Loyola (1-1).
