Cavaliers claim ACC championship

CARY, N.C. -- The sixth-ranked and fifth-seeded Virginia men's soccer team won the ACC championship Sunday afternoon, defeating 20th-ranked and seventh-seeded N.C. State, 1-0 on Will Bates' game-winning goal in the 16th minute.
Goalkeeper and tournament MVP Diego Restrepo posted his eighth consecutive shutout in the win.
Restrepo finished with two saves and didn't allow a goal in the tournament.
Virginia (14-3-3) earned the conference championship for the first time since 2004, for the fourth time during head coach George Gelnovatch's tenure and 10th time overall.
Virginia has now played 837 minutes of soccer without allowing a goal.
Bates' game-winning goal came when Hunter Jumper started the play with a cross across the penalty area from the left side of the field. Midfielder Jordan Evans flicked the cross on with his head, and Bates settled the ball and fired a shot into the back of the net from six yards out.
Jumper, also named to the all-tournament team, and Evans were each credited with an assist.
Bates, who has scored four game-winning goals in his first season as a Cavalier, and Tony Tchani were also named to the all-tournament team for Virginia.
In their last 11 games, the Cavaliers are unbeaten with an 8-0-3 record.
N.C. State goalkeeper Christopher Widman finished with four saves. The Cavaliers outshot the Wolfpack 15-8 and held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Virginia earns the ACC's automatic berth to the NCAA tournament. The field of 48 teams will be announced today at 5:30 p.m.

Virginia 6, Penn St. 2
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Virginia women's soccer team had one of the biggest comeback victories in school history, scoring six unanswered goals in a 20 minute span of the second half to beat No. 9 Penn State (13-6-2) in the second round of the NCAA tournament at Jeffrey Field.
Caroline Miller scored twice while Lauren Alwine, Sinead Farrelly, Erica Hollenberg and Meghan Lenczyk each tallied a score apiece.
The Cavaliers (10-5-6) advanced into the round of 16 for the fifth consecutive season and will visit top-seeded UCLA (19-2-1) at 10 p.m. on Friday.
Lynchburg 2, Washington and Lee 0
LEXINGTON -- Lynchburg recorded a goal in each half as the Hornets defeated Washington and Lee (17-2-3) in the second round of the NCAA tournament at Watt Field.
First-year midfielder Shelley Hoath collected a pass from Betsy Kwiatkowski in the 24th minute to put the Hornets (16-3-3) up 1-0 at the half.
Senior midfielder Ashley Hoath added a goal in the 63rd minute as her corner kick deflected off the post and into the net.
FIELD HOCKEY
Virginia 3, Michigan St. 2, OT
CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Virginia (20-3) advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1998 when Paige Selenski scored the game-winner 1:52 into overtime to beat Michigan State (18-4).
Virginia moves on to play North Carolina at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Wake Forest's Kentner Stadium.
Selenski and Traci Ragukas had the other two goals for Virginia.
