ATLANTA -- Paul Hewitt believes his Georgia Tech team can be special, and after a puzzling exhibition scare, he was glad to see the Yellow Jackets play up to his expectations in their season opener.

Iman Shumpert scored 18 points and capped a decisive run in the first half, and No. 22 Georgia Tech showed off its freshmen in its 100-59 win over Florida A&M on Saturday night.

Derrick Favors, the biggest name in Georgia Tech's heralded freshman class, started and had 10 points and eight rebounds. Another freshman, Brian Oliver, had 12 points on four 3-pointers in the second half.

It was an impressive showing of talent and depth for Georgia Tech, which struggled to an 84-76 overtime exhibition win over Division II Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Sunday.

"Trust me, what happened on Sunday had me scratching my head," Hewitt said. "I thought for sure we'd come out and play better. Today was more of what we expect."

Junior Gani Lawal added 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Miami 83, N.C. Central 53

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Adrian Thomas scored 16 points and Miami defeated North Carolina Central in the Hurricanes' season opener.

Thomas shot 6-for-9 from the field, including 4-for-7 from the 3-point line. Dwayne Collins finished with 12 points and six rebounds for Miami.

The Hurricanes pulled away with a 14-2 spurt in the final 4:42 of the first half. Julian Gamble scored six straight points during the run, including a fast-break dunk for Miami's first double-digit lead at 36-25 with 1:25 left in the half.

Gamble was Miami's third scorer in double figures with 10 points.

Vincent Davis led the Eagles with 16 points. North Carolina Central (0-2) lost its season opener 89-42 at defending NCAA champion North Carolina on Wednesday.

No. 11 Butler 73, Davidson 62

INDIANAPOLIS -- Gordon Hayward scored 17 points and Willie Veasley added 15 to lead Butler.

The Bulldogs (1-0) rallied twice from 10-point deficits in the first half, then used a late run to seal it.

Davidson (0-1) was led by Ben Allison with 13 points.

Though Butler protected its highest preseason ranking in school history, it certainly didn't play its usual style. In the first half, the Bulldogs were in foul trouble, committed seven turnovers and were just 7 of 22 from the field after 16½ minutes.

No. 15 Michigan 97, Northern Michigan 50

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Manny Harris recorded the second triple-double in school history and No. 15 Michigan routed Division II Northern Michigan.

No. 17 Oklahoma 95, Mount St. Mary's 71

NORMAN, Okla. -- Steven Pledger scored 21 points and Oklahoma's much-heralded freshman class lifted the Sooners to a victory over Mount St. Mary's.

Another freshman, Keith "Tiny" Gallon, had 18 points and 15 rebounds, while sophomore Willie Warren added 15 points and a career-high 11 assists for his first double-double for Oklahoma, which has won 23 of its last 25 season openers.

The win was the 1,499th in Oklahoma's history, the 29th-highest total in NCAA Division I.

Mount St. Mary's is 3-19 in season openers since joining Division I. The Mountaineers, the preseason favorite in the Northeast Conference, dropped to 1-14 all-time against ranked foes. Jeremy Goode, the conference's preseason player of the year, led Mount St. Mary's with 18 points but had eight of his team's 15 turnovers.

No. 21 Dayton 90, Creighton 80

DAYTON, Ohio -- Chris Johnson had a double-double, and Chris Wright led a second-half surge that carried Dayton to a victory over Creighton in an opening matchup of teams that won 27 games apiece last season.

Dayton, ranked in the preseason poll for the first time since 1967, overcame a 10-point deficit in the first half and regrouped, pulling away in the closing minutes. The Flyers won their 21st in a row on their home floor, tying the school record.

P'Allen Stinnett scored 18 points to lead the Bluejays, who haven't beaten a ranked team on the road since they upset Larry Bird's Indiana State team on Jan. 28, 1978.

Liberty 89, SVU 53

LYNCHBURG -- Kyle Ohman scored 15 points and led four players in double figures as Liberty beat Southern Virginia.

Chris Perez scored 14 points, Tyler Baker added 13 and Evan Gordon scored 11 for the Flames (1-1). Most of Ohman's points came from the free throw line, as he made all 10 of his free throw attempts.
