UVa's Ryan earns 700th career win

CATONSVILLE, Md. -- Virginia coach Debbie Ryan earned her 700th career victory Friday night, getting 15 second-half points from Monica Wright in a 68-57 win over Maryland-Baltimore County.

Ryan, in her 33rd season at Virginia, is the seventh active Division I women's coach to reach the 700-win mark.

She joins Tennessee's Pat Summitt, Rutgers' C. Vivian Stringer, North Carolina's Sylvia Hatchell, Stanford's Tara VanDerveer, Montana's Robin Selvig and Georgia's Andy Landers.

Coastal Carolina 89, Southern Virginia 20

CONWAY, S.C. -- Sophomore Olivia Irick scored a career-high 17 points as Coastal Carolina opened its season with a rout of Southern Virginia.

The Knights (1-1) finished with 51 turnovers.

MEN

VMI 93, Army 86

LEXINGTON -- Austin Kenon scored 24 points and VMI held off Army 93-86 in the season opener for both teams.

Kenon was only 3-for-11 from the field, but went 17-for-20 from the free-throw line for the Keydets.

Army tied the game at 79. Then, VMI scored six unanswered points to take control down the stretch.

Southern Virginia 97, Penn State-Mont Alto 49

BUENA VISTA -- Ade Swann scored 17 of his 19 points in the first half as Southern Virginia (2-0) defeated Penn State-Mont Alto.

No. 9 Duke 96, UNCG 62

DURHAM, N.C. -- Kyle Singler scored 14 of his 20 points in the first half, and Duke shrugged off the absence of two starters in a rout of UNC Greensboro.

Singler, the ACC's preseason player of the year, was 9-for-5 from the field, and Jon Scheyer added 18 points for the Blue Devils (1-0).

No. 24 Clemson 84, Presbyterian 41

CLEMSON, S.C. -- Freshman Noel Johnson had four of Clemson's 14 3-pointers in a season-opening victory over Presbyterian.

Johnson finished with 12 points.

BC 89, Dartmouth 58

BOSTON -- Starting for the first time in over a year because three teammates were suspended on the eve of the opener, Tyler Roche scored a career-high 30 points to lead Boston College to victory over Dartmouth.

BC starting forwards Corey Raji and Rakim Sanders, along with substitute Cortney Dunn, were suspended for two games for an unspecified violation of team rules.

Maryland 89, Charleston Southern 51

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Landon Milbourne scored 16, Greivis Vasquez compensated for a poor shooting performance with 13 assists, and Maryland cruised to a season-opening rout of Charleston Southern.

Wake Forest 76, Oral Roberts 56

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Al-Farouq Aminu led Wake Forest with 25 points and 13 rebounds as the Demon Deacons opened with a win over Oral Roberts.

No. 1 Kansas 101, Hofstra 65

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Xavier Henry hit five 3-pointers and scored 27 points to set a school freshman record, and top-ranked Kansas wore down overmatched Hofstra.

No. 2 Michigan St. 97, Florida Gulf Coast 58

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Durrell Summers scored 14 of his 17 points in the first half, Kalin Lucas scored 21 and Michigan State pulled away from Florida Gulf Coast.

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Kentucky freshman Eric Bledsoe scored 24 points while starting in place of John Wall, and the Wildcats opened the John Calipari era with a win over Morehead State.

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Corey Stokes scored 20 points, Corey Fisher added 13 and Villanova overcame a sloppy first half for a victory over Fairleigh Dickinson.

No. 7 Purdue 89, Cal State Northridge 63

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Robbie Hummel scored 17 points to help Purdue beat Cal State Northridge in the season opener for both teams.

Hummel also had six rebounds, four assists and two blocks.

No. 12 UConn 75, William & Mary 66

STORRS, Conn. -- Jerome Dyson scored 27 points and Connecticut opened its season with a win over William and Mary.

The senior guard was playing his first regular-season game since tearing the meniscus in his right knee against Syracuse on Feb. 11, causing him to miss UConn's run to the Final Four. Dyson also had eight assists and four steals.

William and Mary kept the game close by hitting 13 shots from 3-point range, and got within four in the second half. Quinn McDowell led the Tribe (0-1) with 20 points.

No. 23 Illinois 96, SIU-Edwardsville 69

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Freshman guard Brandon Paul scored 22 points, and Illinois rolled to a victory over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.

No. 25 Minnesota 87, Tennessee Tech 50

MINNEAPOLIS -- Lawrence Westrbrook scored 22 points and Minnesota won its season opener over Tennessee Tech.

Iowa prep star chooses North Carolina

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa prep phenom Harrison Barnes says he'll play for North Carolina.

Barnes, a 6-foot-7 swingman from Ames, is widely regarded as the top player in the Class of 2010. Barnes also considered Duke, Kansas, Oklahoma, UCLA and Iowa State, his hometown school.

Wildcats star mulls ankle surgery

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern forward Kevin Coble said he is considering surgery after hurting his left foot in practice Tuesday.

The 6-foot-8 senior is going to see a specialist Monday.

With surgery, Coble would miss about four months before he would even be able to begin his rehabilitation.

Coble said if he has surgery, he would consider coming back for another season. He averaged 15.5 points a year ago while leading Northwestern to the NIT.
