Tech women reach soccer milestone

DAYTON, Ohio -- The Virginia Tech women's soccer team claimed its first NCAA tournament victory in program history as the third-seeded Hokies took down Murray State 2-0 in the first round Friday.

Marika Gray and Jennifer Harvey (Cave Spring) scored the first postseason goals of their careers, while sophomore keeper Kristin Carden earned her second shutout of this year's postseason and her first ever in the NCAA tournament.

In the 13th minute, the Hokies (15-7) broke the game open. Julian Johnson had the ball on the right side of the field and served it into the middle where Gray had an open look at the net. She took one touch and fired the ball into the back of the right side of the goal. It was Gray's eighth score of the season and Johnson's seventh assist.

Tech was able to increase its lead over the Racers (11-9-2) before the half as Harvey made a penalty kick to remain a perfect 5-for-5 on the year. She buried the ball in the right side of the net to put Tech ahead.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Virginia 1, St. John's 0 (PKs)

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Virginia advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament with a shootout victory over St. John's (13-6-2) following a 0-0 tie.

Chantel Jones made two saves in the shootout, while the Cavaliers made all three of their kicks to advance 3-1.

Julia Roberts, Lindsey Miller and Kika Toulouse all converted for Virginia (9-5-6) in the shootout.

MEN'S SOCCER

Virginia 1, Wake Forest 0 (PKs)

CARY, N.C. -- Fifth-seeded Virginia advanced to the ACC final for the second straight season by edging top-seeded Wake Forest on penalty kicks at WakeMed Soccer Park.

The Cavaliers (13-3-3) outscored the Deacons (14-3-3) 5-4 in the shootout, with Neil Barlow providing the winning goal.

Virginia plays seventh-seeded N.C. State for the championship at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Tony Tchani, Greg Monaco, Ari Dimas and Jonathan Villanueva also made their penalty kicks for UVa.

Radford 4, High Point 3

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. -- Radford scored a season-high four goals and held off second-seeded High Point late in the second half to advance to the Big South semifinals.

The seventh-seeded Highlanders (5-8-3) will face third-seeded Liberty at 7 p.m. today.

James Jordan and Brian Gwanzura scored first-half goals for Radford, and Brendan Shaffer and Iyiola Awosika added second-half goals. Awosika's goal in the 71st minute extended the lead to 4-1.

Coastal Carolina 1, VMI 0

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. -- A second-half goal by Big South player of the year Djamel Bekka was the only score of the game as top-seeded Coastal Carolina (9-2-6) beat eighth-seeded VMI (2-15-1) in the first round of the Big South tournament.

Bekka scored in the 64th minute.

Fonder honored

Former North Cross and Roanoke College star player Dustin Fonder of High Point has been named the Big South men's soccer coach of the year.

The All-Big South second team included VMI's Ayao Sossou and Radford's Myles Jones. The all-freshman team included Jones and RU's James Jordan.
