MEN'S BASKETBALL
Southern Virginia 86, Va. Intermont 47
BUENA VISTA -- A stifling defense led Southern Virginia to a commanding lead in the first half, and the Knights went on to win their season opener.
SVU was able to keep the Cobras in check for large portions of the first half and only allowed them to score 22 points. Meanwhile, the hosts were sprinting to a lead they would never relinquish. At one point SVU was up 25-2, and the lead would only get bigger.
Ade Swann led all players with 21-points, while Terell Johnson pulled down eight rebounds.
The Knights forced 30 turnovers, and went to the foul line 34 times. One of the few concerns for SVU coaches was the poor performance at the foul line. SVU converted only 20 of 34 attempts.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Southern Virginia 62, Va. Intermont 52
BUENA VISTA -- Southern Virginia caught fire from 3-point range and from the free-throw line in the second half to secure its first win of the season.
The Knights (1-1), leading 31-28 at halftime, shot 56 percent from beyond the 3-point arc in the final 20 minutes and were 8-of-10 from the charity stripe.
Kesia Ford led SVU with 16 points. Kara Hiatt added 13, while Cara Joyner and Amanda Prestwich contributed 12 and 10 respectively.
Southern Virginia won despite 29 turnovers, 14 by Hiatt.
Virginia Intermont, which had 30 turnovers, fell to 0-3 on the season.
