Local football roundup: Panthers fall to Averett in 3 overtimes

FERRUM -- Dontavious Watson scored a touchdown on a 25-yard run in the third overtime to give Averett (7-2, 5-1) a 34-28 USA South victory over Ferrum on Saturday.

The winning touchdown came after Ferrum (4-5, 2-4) fumbled on its possession in the third overtime.

The Panthers trailed 14-7 late in the fourth quarter but got a 1-yard touchdown run from Matt Dobson with 57 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

Mike Vann had 1- and 8-yard touchdown runs in overtime for Ferrum. Watson scored on a 3-yard run in the second overtime for the Cougars. Cody Ladutko threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Squilini in the first overtime for Averett.

Ferrum got the first possession of the third overtime, but Dobson fumbled on the Panthers' third play.

Dobson finished with 171 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries. Watson gained 88 yards and scored twice on 18 carries for Averett.

Emory & Henry 23, Washington and Lee 16

EMORY -- Drew Piscopo of the Wasps (6-3, 2-3 ODAC) threw two touchdown passes and rushed for another in a win over W&L (3-7, 2-4).

Two of Piscopo's four completions were touchdown passes to Jonathan Hawkins (Rural Retreat).

With 5:59 left in the third quarter, the pair connected on a 13-yard touchdown pass, giving Emory & Henry a 23-6 lead.

Jonathan Clemo (Salem) had a 1-yard touchdown run in the third for the Generals to make the score 23-13.

Clemo had 96 yards and one touchdown on 21 carries in his team's season finale.

Villanova 21,

Richmond 20

RICHMOND -- Brandyn Harvey made a one-handed grab of Chris Whitney's fourth-down pass for a 29-yard touchdown with 59 seconds left and Villanova stunned Richmond.

The Wildcats (8-1, 5-1 CAA) ended UR's 17-game winning streak.

Richmond (8-1, 6-1) missed two field goals and two extra points, including the one after a go-ahead touchdown.

The Spiders drove to the Wildcats' 17 with 10 seconds left, but Andrew Howard's 35-yard field-goal try was wide left.

W&M 31, Towson 0

WILLIAMSBURG -- R.J. Archer ran for a touchdown and passed for another, and William and Mary (8-1, 5-1 CAA) beat Towson (2-7, 1-5).

Archer, who went 14-for-26 for 206 yards, threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Eric Robertson.

JMU 22, Maine 14

HARRISONBURG -- Justin Thorpe threw one touchdown pass and ran for a TD, helping James Madison score the game's first 22 points.

Thorpe was 9-for-13 for 133 yards with two interceptions for the Dukes (4-5, 2-4 CAA), and he added 83 yards rushing on 17 carries.

The James Madison quarterback rushed for a 42-yard touchdown to put the Dukes up 9-0 midway through the second quarter.

Thorpe finished James Madison's scoring with a 31-yard pass to Scott Noble less than five minutes into the third.

ODU 42, N.C. Central 28

NORFOLK. -- Thomas DeMarco rushed for 225 yards and four touchdowns, and threw for another TD, to lead Old Dominion (8-2) to victory.

Bethune-Cookman 27,

Hampton 24

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Jonathan Moment ran for three touchdowns as Bethune-Cookman beat Hampton (4-5, 2-4 MEAC).

After his team trailed 24-20 at halftime, Moment broke a 19-yard touchdown run with 10:09 left in the third quarter.

Norfolk State 31,

Morgan State 23

BALTIMORE -- Norfolk State (5-4, 4-3 MEAC) won its second consecutive game behind 145 rushing yards from DeAngelo Branche, beating host Morgan State (5-4, 3-3).

Randolph-Macon 33, Bridgewater 23

BRIDGEWATER -- Randolph-Macon (6-3, 4-1 ODAC) scored 19 straight second-half points, rallying to beat Bridgewater (6-3, 3-2).

The Yellow Jackets regained the lead at 24-21 in the first nine minutes of the second half on a Josh Storm field goal and an Austin Faulkner 13-yard touchdown pass to Steve Matthews.

Drake Sanders ran for 155 yards off the bench for the Jackets after starting tailback Thaddeus Scruggs was hurt.

The winner of the Jackets' home game with Hampden-Sydney next weekend will earn the league's automatic NCAA playoff bid.

Hampden-Sydney 59, Salisbury 14

SALISBURY, Md. -- Hampden-Sydney (9-0) scored 31 first-quarter points and got six touchdown passes from Corey Sedlar in a win over Salisbury (4-5).

N.C. Wesleyan 38,

Shenandoah 28

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- Bo Jordan threw for 208 yards and two TDs to keep the Bishops (7-2, 6-0) in sole possession of first place in the USA South.

The winner of the Bishops' game at Averett next weekend will earn the league's automatic NCAA playoff bid.

Keone Kyle ran for 182 yards and one TD for the Hornets (1-8, 0-6).

Maryville (Tenn.) 21,

Christopher Newport 14

NEWPORT NEWS -- Christopher Newport (5-4, 4-2) gave up 14 fourth-quarter points in the USA South loss to Maryville (4-5, 2-4).

Tim Conner tied the score at 14 with a 1-yard run with 11:50 to play and threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Sam McCord with 8:29 left to give the Scots the win.

Tunde Ogun rushed for 55 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries for the Captains.

Cumberlands 38,

UVa-Wise 21

WISE -- UVa-Wise (5-5, 4-2) committed four turnovers in a loss to Cumberlands (9-1, 5-1). Cumberlands won the Mid-South Eastern Division title for the third consecutive season.

Webber Int'l 24,

Southern Virginia 17

LAKE WALES, Fla. -- The Knights fell to 2-8, remaining winless this season against varsity competition.
