W&L's win garners NCAA bid
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Second-seeded Washington and Lee outscored top-seeded Virginia Wesleyan 3-2 in penalty kicks to claim the ODAC women's soccer championship Saturday -- the team's third conference title and first since 2003.
The Generals (16-1-3) earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. The host Marlins fell to 17-3-1.
After playing to a 0-0 tie in regulation and overtime, the two teams advanced to penalty kicks.
The Generals missed their first two penalty kicks and fell behind 1-0. But Kat Lawson, Page Minton and Ainsley Daigle converted the next three for the Generals.
Goalie Emily Leary stopped two of Virginia Wesleyan's penalty kicks and also made eight saves in regulation and OT.
VOLLEYBALL
Maroons lose ODAC final
Seventh-seeded Roanoke (15-17) fell to top-seed Randolph-Macon (28-6) in the ODAC championship match at Hollins.
Randolph-Macon earned an NCAA tournament bid and its first conference championship with a 25-23, 25-16, 24-26, 25-18 victory.
The Maroons faced a championship point in the third game but rallied to win that game.
Roanoke's Maggie Wagner had 19 kills and 25 digs, while Kelsey Largen had 19 kills and nine digs.
The Maroons advanced to the title match with a four-game victory over third-seeded Lynchburg. Wagner had 20 kills and 25 diggs in that match.
Wagner and fellow Maroons Kesley Largen and Caitlyn Long were named to the all-tournament team.
MEN'S SOCCER
Lynchburg 3, Roanoke 1
LYNCHBURG -- Third-seeded Lynchburg (16-2-2) scored three second-half goals to beat fourth-seeded Roanoke (12-6-4) to win the ODAC championship and an automatic NCAA playoff bid.
Chris Collins scored in the 24th minute to give Roanoke the lead, but Zach Ward, Ryan Renfro and Scott Coleman scored for the Hornets.
Virginia 1, N.C. State 0
CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Ross LaBauex scored in the 21st minute to give seventh-ranked Virginia (12-3-2, 4-3-1) an ACC win over 18th-ranked N.C. State (12-6-1, 2-6-1).
Coastal Carolina 3, Radford 1
CONWAY, S.C. -- Coastal Carolina (8-2-6, 5-0-3) won the Big South regular-season title with a win over Radford (4-8-3, 1-4-3).
Brendan Shaffer scored the Highlanders' goal.
Presbyterian 1, VMI 0
CLINTON, S.C. -- Presbyterian (3-11-2, 2-4-2 Big South) defeated VMI (2-14-1, 1-7) for the first time in school history.
Brian Sowell made seven saves for VMI, which allowed a goal to Paul Gunning in the 42nd minute. VMI was outshot 14-12.
FIELD HOCKEY
Radford 3, Longwood 2
STANFORD, Ca. -- Radford (11-10) defeated Longwood (10-11) in the third-place game of the NorPac tournament.
Courtney Poole's goal with just over 10 minutes left proved to be the game-winner. It was her 11th goal of the year.
Jennifer Wisniewski made eight saves for Radford.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Winston-Salem State 63, Southern Virginia 36
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Cara Joyner scored 10 points in Southern Virginia's exhibition loss at Winston-Salem State.
Joyner was the only player in double figures for the Knights, who scored 10 points in the second half.
WRESTLING
Hokies split dual match
BLACKSBURG -- Virginia Tech opened its season by splitting a pair of dual matches, beating Chattanooga 21-18 and falling to Kent State 20-18.
Jarrod Garnett rallied for an 8-6 sudden-death win over Troy Opfer of Kent State and also won in the first period against Chattanooga.
Pete Yates got two wins for the Hokies, while Erik Spjut picked up his first collegiate victory.
SWIMMING
Hokies earn ACC sweep
BLACKSBURG -- The Virginia Tech men and women combined to go 3-0 in meets against Duke and Miami.
The Hokie men beat Duke 180-112, while the women beat Duke (174-126) and Miami (208-86).
Stephen Hawkins won the 100 freestyle (46.93) and the 100 back (50.51) for the men, while Erika Hajnal won the 200 butterfly (2:03.18) and the 400 IM (4:20.93).
