Drye, Biggs shine in exhibition

BLACKSBURG -- Lindsay Biggs and Utahya Drye led the Hokies as Virginia Tech beat Lenoir-Rhyne 71-59 in its preseason scrimmage at Cassell Coliseum on Monday night.
Biggs scored 15 points and grabbed five rebounds for the Hokies. Drye had 14 points and six boards.
Center Brittany Gordon had eight points and six rebounds, though Tech was outrebounded 42-37 by Lenoir-Rhyne.
Freshman Alyssa Fenyn started at shooting guard and had two points and five rebounds. Nikki Davis had eight points, four assists and four steals for the Hokies, who will open their 2009-10 season at home on Nov. 13 against Longwood.
Freshman Abby Reddick, of Hidden Valley High School, had six points and Aerial Wilson had seven.
Jami Sanfrit had 15 points and four rebounds for Lenoir-Rhyne, but also had eight turnovers.

Greenberg named to
Jewish hall of fame
Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg will be inducted into the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in April in Commack, N.Y.
Greenberg will be one of seven members of the 2010 class, which includes former pro wrestler Bill Goldberg, Olympic swimmer Jason Lezak and ex-NFL lineman Alan Veingrad.
Previous inductees include Red Auerbach, Sandy Koufax, Hank Greenberg, Bruce Pearl, Lou Carnesecca, Mark Spitz, Jay Fiedler, Ernie Grunfeld, Red Holzman and Howard Cosell.

Area players honored
Cave Spring graduate Jennifer Harvey of Virginia Tech has been named to the academic all-district first team by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Harvey has a 3.9 GPA. She has scored a team-high eight goals for the Hokies.
VMI's Audrey Falconi (3.8 GPA), made the second team. Tech's Emily Jukich (3.6) made the third team, as did Washington and Lee's Heather Deisher (3.8) and Allie Espina (3.5).
On the men's side, Jefferson Forest graduate Adam Roscioli (3.9) of Old Dominion made the first team. VMI's Daniel Welsh (3.7) and Tech's Craig Burnell (3.9) made the second team, as did Southern Virginia's David Haws (3.9) and Jefferson Forest graduate Hunter Smith (3.4) of Lynchburg College.
Radford 1, High Point 1
RADFORD -- Brian Gwanzura netted a rebound off a shot from teammate Iyiola Awosika to even the score while a man down, and the Highlanders played to a double-overtime tie in Big South men's soccer.
Liberty 2, VMI 0
LYNCHBURG -- Brian Sowell made nine saves on 11 shots on goal, but the Keydets men's soccer team dropped a Big South match to Liberty.
Tech seed 4th, UVa 7th
Virginia Tech earned its highest-ever seed in the ACC women's tournament at 4 and will take on fifth-seeded Wake Forest on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at the WakMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. Seventh-seeded Virginia will play second-seeded Boston College at 5 p.m.

Coles paces Highlanders
PINEHURST, N.C. -- Hannah Coles shot a 7-over 79 to lead Radford's women into 12th place after the first day of the two-day Pinehurst Challenge at Pinehurst No. 6.
The Highlanders shot a 322 as a team, 31 strokes behind leader College of Charleston.
Radford men 10th
SAPPHIRE, N.C. -- Weston Eklund is tied for 25th with a one-over 72 after the first day of the two-day Hummingbird Intercollegiate at the Sapphire Valley Country Club. The Highlanders are tied for 10th with a team score of 293. Kentucky leads the tournament at 279.
