Captains run roughshod over Panthers
CNU's Antonio Epps and Tunde Ogun combine for 233 yards rushing against Ferrum.
FERRUM -- The month was different, and there was less on the line. But the outcome was the same.
All-American halfback Tunde Ogun rushed for 106 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries to lead Christopher Newport to a 28-14 win over Ferrum on Saturday.
The defending USA South champion Captains (5-3, 4-1) outscored Ferrum 14-0 in the second half, with Ogun scoring both touchdowns.
CNU beat Ferrum (4-4, 2-3) for the sixth straight year.
"It's mistakes," said Ferrum quarterback Matt Dobson, who passed for 137 yards. "It's not that they outplay us, or we don't play up to their level. It's mistakes."
These teams had met in their regular-season finale ever since CNU added football in 2001, but this time the duel came earlier in the schedule.
Three times this decade, the league's automatic NCAA Division III playoff bid was at stake in this meeting. Last year, CNU beat Ferrum 13-10 to claim the berth.
But North Carolina Wesleyan (6-2, 5-0), which has beaten CNU and Ferrum, is in the driver's seat for the bid this year.
The Panthers, who have two games left to play, can still have a winning season. But they had hoped to be a title contender again this season.
"We should have won the majority of the games," linebacker Maureik Goode said. "Mistakes cost you."
"We really wanted to do better," halfback Mike Vann said. "We're not hitting on all cylinders."
CNU's Antonio Epps ran for 127 yards and completed seven of 10 passes for 82 yards. He had a key pass on a third-quarter touchdown drive but missed most of the second half with a bruised hip.
The Captains burned Ferrum with two big plays in the first half. Epps had a 91-yard TD run up the right sideline. Receiver T.J. Foster scored on a 27-yard reverse up the right sideline after getting the ball on a toss sweep from Ogun.
CNU hurt Ferrum with a power running game in the second half, which was Ogun's time to shine. He ran for 90 yards on 24 carries in the half.
The Captains opened the third quarter with a 13-play, 79-yard drive. The 6-foot, 220-pound Ogun capped the series with a 5-yard TD run that gave CNU a 21-14 lead with 7:27 left in the third quarter.
"We just wanted to keep grinding," Ogun said. "Sometimes patience is the best route.
"They were worn down."
Ferrum drove to the CNU 19 on the next series, but a bad pitch on third down by Dobson forced the Panthers to punt.
"When you don't have many possessions, you can't blow them like that," Ferrum coach Dave Davis said. "Every phase of the game at one point or another shot us in the foot."
In the fourth quarter, Ferrum's Steven Harris fumbled while trying to catch the ball on a punt return. CNU's Robert Davis recovered the ball at the FC 44. Eleven carries by Ogun later, CNU extended the lead to 28-14 on a 5-yard run by Ogun with 2:57 to go.
"I misjudged it," Harris said of the fumble. "I just didn't get up under it like I was supposed to, to secure it."
Harris and Quintel Banks each ran for a first-half touchdown for Ferrum, but the Panthers had the ball for just 11:06 in the second half. Ferrum entered the game with the sixth-leading rushing offense in Division III but was held to 190 yards on the ground -- more than 100 yards below its average.
"They did a good job of controlling the clock," Vann said.
The Captains rushed for 309 yards, and were 10-of-18 on third and fourth down combined.
"We didn't play as clean and as good a football game as we played last year [at CNU]," Davis said. "This is kind of what we've been doing all year on defense -- it's just an inexperience factor."
