Bridgewater edges W&L in OT
LEXINGTON -- The Washington and Lee football team missed a potential game-winning 24-yard field goal with four seconds remaining in regulation and fell in overtime to Bridgewater 35-34 on Saturday afternoon.
Trailing 28-20, the Eagles (6-2, 3-1) knotted the game with 5:33 remaining on a 73-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Hagan Driskell to junior wide receiver Tyler Beiler. Driskell then found junior wide receiver Leigh Bradley for the two-point conversion to make it 28-28.
After each team exchanged turnovers around midfield, the Generals (3-6, 2-3) were driving in Bridgewater territory with under a minute remaining when sophomore running back Jonathan Clemo (Salem) broke off a 20-yard run and intentionally slid down on the 6-yard line. The Generals ran three plays to center the ball for the field-goal attempt with seven seconds remaining, but junior place-kicker Martin Prichard was wide left and the game went to overtime.
In the extra session, Bridgewater scored three plays in when Driskell again hooked up with Beiler, this time from 20 yards out for the 35-28 lead. The Generals found paydirt just two plays into their possession on a 1-yard touchdown run by Clemo and then went for two points and the win. However, sophomore quarterback Charlie Westfal's pass was knocked away in the end zone.
Westfal completed 10 of 16 passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. He also rushed 16 times for 79 yards and a touchdown. Clemo carried the ball 23 times for 93 yards and one touchdown, while sophomore running back Harrison Hudson (Salem) rushed for 71 yards on eight carries.
Southern Virginia 40, Radford 20
BUENA VISTA -- Led by senior Sam Trulock and a strong defense, Southern Virginia (2-7) beat the Radford (3-4) club football team.
Trulock, along with Josh Barrett combined for 165 yards passing and five TDs. The defense picked off four Radford passes.
Quinton Garruss contributed 81 yards rushing. Travis Duffy was a favorite target for Barrett and Trulock as he hauled in five passes for 94 yards and two touchdowns.
Mike Massey completed 14 of 24 passes for 194 yards and two touchdowns, but suffered three interceptions for the Highlanders. Vittorian "Tree" Devlin caught 10 passes for 167 yards and a touchdown.
JMU 20, Delaware 8
NEWARK, Del. -- Justin Thorpe ran for one touchdown and threw for another while James Madison's defense registered eight sacks in a win over Delaware.
Trailing 3-0 at halftime, the Dukes (3-5, 1-4 CAA) scored all three of their touchdowns in the second half to snap a four-game losing streak and post its first victory at Delaware since 1994.
The Dukes had gone 12 straight quarters without a touchdown before Thorpe scored on a 12-yard run early in the third quarter and then threw a 7-yard scoring pass to Charlie Newman later in the period.
Thorpe went 11-for-15 for 262 yards while rushing for 42 yards on 11 carries. Rockeed McCarter caught three passes for 125 yards.
Delaware's Pat Devlin completed 19 of 42 passes for 215 yards with two interceptions.
The Hens (3-3, 5-3) got a pair of field goals from Jon Striefsky.
Richmond 42, Towson 14
TOWSON, Md. -- Kendall Gaskins ran for two scores and caught a touchdown pass from Eric Ward, helping Richmond remain undefeated with a victory over Towson.
Justin Forte rushed for 121 yards, including a go-ahead 10-yard touchdown run that ignited a decisive 22-point third quarter for the Spiders (8-0, 6-0 CAA).
Richmond has won a school-record 17 straight games and 11 straight on the road.
Towson (2-6, 1-4) led 14-13 after quarterback Tommy Chroniger scored on a 12-yard keeper with 10:54 left in the third quarter. Chroniger had earlier thrown a 19-yard TD pass to John Godlasky.
But Richmond responded with a six-play, 62-yard scoring drive capped by Forte's scamper with under three minutes to go.
William & Mary 39, Rhode Island 14
KINGSTON, R.I. -- Courtland Marriner rushed for three touchdowns and William and Mary beat Rhode Island.
Marriner had 93 yards rushing and scored on runs of 9, 16 and 39 yards for the Tribe (7-1, 4-1 CAA).
After the Rams (1-7, 0-5) took a 7-0 lead on a 5-yard pass from Chris Paul-Etienne to Shawn Leonard, the Tribe scored 39 unanswered points. In addition to Marriner's three touchdowns, the Tribe got an 18-yard touchdown run from Terrence Riggins.
Tribe quarterback R.J. Archer went 18-for-23 for 175 yards.
The Tribe set a school record by allowing minus-46 yards rushing on 28 attempts.
Norfolk State 41, Howard 6
NORFOLK -- Dennis Brown threw two touchdowns and ran for another, sparking Norfolk State's rout of Howard .
Brown was 12-for-21 with 226 yards and ran for 66 yards on 12 carries for the Spartans (4-4, 3-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference). Chris Bell had four catches for 138 yards and two scores. DeAngelo Branche ran for 129 yards on 19 carries.
Floyd Hagler's 30-yard pass to Willie Carter was the only score for the Bison (2-6, 0-5), who took a 6-0 lead with 4:40 left in the first quarter after a blocked extra point.
Brown connected with Bell on touchdown passes of 51 and 64 yards in the first, and Justin Castellat made field goals from 27 and 31 yards away to put the Spartans up 20-6 at halftime.
Hampton 16, Winston-Salem 13, OT
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Steve Robinson scored on an 11-yard run in overtime as Hampton rallied to defeat Winston-Salem State.
The Pirates (4-4) trailed 10-0 with 2:35 left in the third quarter, then forced overtime by scoring 10 unanswered points in the fourth. Hampton finished with 263 yards rushing. LaMarcus Coker contributed 109 yards on 28 carries, while Robinson had 101 yards on 14 attempts.
Liberty 55, Presbyterian 19
LYNCHBURG -- Andreakis Allen and SirChauncey Holloway each ran for two touchdowns, and Liberty beat Presbyterian.
Holloway, who rushed for 99 yards, scored on runs of 4 and 14 yards. Allen ran for 92 yards, with touchdown runs of 2 and 14 yards. Tommy Beecher was 15-for-17 with 159 yards passing for the Flames (6-2, 3-0 Big South).
St. Paul's 16, Lincoln (Pa.) 6
SOUTH HILL -- St. Paul's forced nine Lincoln turnovers, including eight interceptions, and also scored on the return of a blocked extra-point attempt.
Lincoln received the opening kickoff, but on the first play from scrimmage fumbled. St. Paul's recovered and on its first offensive play got a 14-yard touchdown run from Jermaine Williams.
Elizabeth City State 21, Virginia Union 13
RICHMOND -- Elizabeth City's victory forced a three-way tie atop the CIAA Eastern Division along with Virginia Union and Bowie State. The conference will break the tie with a coin-flip this afternoon. All three teams finished with a 5-2 conference record. Queen Wesley ran for 145 yards for Virginia Union, while Cedric Blacknell had three rushing touchdowns for ECSU.
Virginia State 14, Bowie State 12
ETTRICK -- Virginia State (7-4, 5-3) held off a Bowie State (5-6, 5-3) rally, stopping a two-point conversion attempt with 2:49 to play. Rahoo Walker and Antwain Lyde each scored touchdowns for Virginia State. Bowie State trailed 14-6 heading into the fourth, but got a Ramono Flowers two-yard touchdown run with less than three minutes left.
Emory & Henry 13, Catholic 10
WASHINGTON -- Caleb Jennings scored on a 2-yard run and the Emory & Henry (5-3, 1-3) defense held Catholic (1-7, 0-4) scoreless in the second half to lead the Wasps to the ODAC victory.
Jennings gave the Wasps a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, scoring on a 15-yard run, but Catholic scored 10 points in the second quarter to lead 10-6 at halftime.
The Wasps returned the opening kickoff of the second half to the Catholic 41 and nine plays later got the game-winning touchdown.
Jennings gained 79 yards and scored twice on 23 rushing attempts for the Wasps, while Catholic's Ric Barry rushed for 152 yards on 32 carries.
Guilford 20, Randolph-Macon 13
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Guilford (2-6, 1-3) built a 20-6 lead and threw for 378 yards in an ODAC win over Randolph-Macon (5-3, 3-1).
Trailing 6-3 after the first quarter, the Quakers claimed the lead 31 seconds into the second on a Billy Watkins 61-yard touchdown pass to Mike Williams.
Brad Scott kicked his second field goal of the game to give the Quakers a 13-6 lead at the break.
Late in the third, Jon McKinney caught a 41-yard touchdown from Watkins to give the Quakers the 20-6 lead. With less than four minutes to play, R-MC's Dewayne Jenkins scored on a 24-yard pass from Austin Faulkner to make it 20-13.
Watkins went 35-for-52 for 378 yards and two touchdowns for the Quakers, who had just seven yards rushing on 20 attempts. Thaddeus Scruggs ran for 115 yards on 23 carries for Randolph-Macon.
Averett 24, Shenandoah 22
DANVILLE -- Averett (6-2, 4-1) withstood a late Shenandoah (1-7, 0-5) rally to win the USA South matchup.
Shenandoah trailed 24-9 going into the fourth quarter, but scored a touchdown on a Vern Lunsford 6-yard run early in the quarter to pull within 24-16. With just 18 seconds left in the game, Brandon Hayes hauled in a 15-yard touchdown pass from Lunsford to make the score 24-22. Lunsford's pass on the two-point conversion attempt fell incomplete.
Dontavius Watson rushed for 117 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries for Averett. Averett quarterback Cody Ludutko was 15-for-25 for 192 with a touchdown and an interception. Lunsford went 18-for-29 for 232 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
ODU 31, Georgetown 10
NORFOLK -- Thomas DeMarco rushed for 144 yards and three touchdowns and threw for another score to lead Old Dominion to a victory over Georgetown (0-8).
DeMarco scored on runs of 51, 15 and 6 yards as the Monarchs (7-2) won their fourth consecutive game. He was also 6-for-11 for 79 yards and threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Reid Evans.
Desmond Williams added 113 yards on the ground.
