UVa's Heineking wins ACC cross country title, White 2nd
CARY, N.C. -- Virginia's Emil Heineking won the ACC men's cross country championship on Saturday at the WakeMed Soccer Park, while Northside graduate Catherine White of UVa took second on the women's side.
In the team competition, the UVa men finished second and the UVa women were third.
Behind Will Mulherin's seventh place finish, the Virginia Tech men were fifth. Devin Cornwall was 13th for the Hokies. Both runners earned All-ACC honors.
Jessica Trapeni was the Virginia Tech women's top runner, taking 49th overall. As a team, the Hokies were 10th overall.
N.C. State won the men's championship with 56 points. Virginia's 71 points were one better than Florida State. Duke finished fourth.
The Florida State women were 34 points better than second place Duke. After Virginia came N.C. State and North Carolina.
Lynchburg sweeps ODAC titles
Lynchburg College claimed both the men's and women's ODAC cross country championships at Mowles Spring Park in Salem.
Washington and Lee's men (81 points) took third place, while the Roanoke men (148) were fifth. C. Harrison Tucker placed 10th overall (28:17.54) for Washington and Lee and teammate Robert Warneford-Thomson was 12th, as both earned second team All-ODAC honors. Thomson was also the ODAC men's scholar athlete of the Year. Josh Metz of Roanoke finished in 20th place (29:08.56). Lynchburg won with 33 points.
The Washington and Lee women (41) took second overall and were followed a spot behind by Roanoke (75).
Kat Telfeyan of Washington and Lee grabbed first team All-ODAC honors with a second place finish. W&L's Sarah Keckler (5th) and Lauren Schultz (7th) also earned a spot on the first team all-conference squad. Schultz was named the Rookie of the Year.
Roanoke's Caroline Casey placed 12th to earn second team All-ODAC.
The Lynchburg women had 29 points to claim the title.
VMI'S Granger named runner of the year
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- VMI's Hannah Granger won the Big South women's cross country championship, leading the Keydets to second place finish. Granger was named the conference's runner of the year after running an 18:25. She is the first VMI women's runner to win the conference championship.
Jenna Moye was fourth for the Keydets and was named the freshman of the year. Paul Spangler was named coach of the year after leading the Keydets to the second place finish.
Lori Crotts (Craig County) came in fifth place to help the Radford women to a fifth place finish.
The VMI men took fourth overall behind a 16th place finish from Andrey Dmitriev. Sam Keltner was Radford's top runner (42nd). The Highlanders were ninth overall.
Ferrum 5th at USA South
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Ferrum men tied for fifth at the USA South cross country championships. TJ Cleary placed 22nd to pace the Panthers.
MEN'S SOCCER
Duke 4, Virginia Tech 1
DURHAM, N.C. -- Daniel Tweed-Kent scored his first two goals of the season to lead 16th-ranked Duke (12-4, 4-3) to an ACC win over Virginia Tech (5-10-2, 2-5).
Tweed-Kent scored both of his goals in the first 21 minutes of the match.
Charlie Campbell scored on a header in the 22nd minute to bring the Hokies to within one, but Duke extended the lead back to two by halftime.
Stefan Caulfield made five saves in the Virginia Tech goal.
Virginia 0, Maryland 0
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Tenth-ranked Virginia (10-3-2, 3-3-1) and sixth-ranked Maryland (10-4-2, 4-2-2) played to a 0-0 tie in an ACC match.
Maryland outshot the Cavaliers 18-11 in the contest, but Cavalier goalie Diego Restrepo was able to turn away all seven Terp shots on goal.
Both teams missed on quality scoring chances in overtime. Maryland's Matt Kassel hit the post with a shot in the 105th minute, while Virginia's Brian Ownby had his header in the 108th minute saved by Maryland goalie Zac MacMath.
Hampden-Sydney 3, Washington and Lee 0
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY -- Despite holding a 12-11 edge in shots, Washington and Lee (5-7-4) lost on the road to Hampden-Sydney (16-3) in the ODAC quarterfinals.
Matt Swaney scored in the 41st minute for the Tigers who got five saves from John Robert Plyler in goal. The Generals did not make a save on the 11 Tiger shots.
Roanoke 1, Eastern Mennonite 0
Host Roanoke defeated Eastern Mennonite in the quarterfinals of the ODAC tournament. The Maroons advance to play top-seeded Virginia Wesleyan in Norfolk on Wednesday.
With no score late in the match, Roanoke's Jon Marc Winchester was fouled in the Eastern Mennonite goal box, setting the stage for a penalty kick. Chris Colins (William Byrd) converted the kick for his 10th goal of the season and a 1-0 Roanoke lead.
Roanoke held Eastern Mennonite to three shots in the match, none in the second half. Ryan Russell had to make just one save in Roanoke's goal.
Christopher Newport 5, Ferrum 2
FERRUM -- Ferrum (2-13-1, 0-6) got goals from Isaac Slone and Chris Key, but got outshot 27-11 by Christopher Newport (16-2, 6-0) in the USA South loss. Ben Pittsley made two saves in a half of work for the Panthers.
Winston Mattheisen scored twice for the Christopher Newport which is ranked seventh in the nation.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Virginia 1, Florida State 0
CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Sinead Farrelly scored in the 44th minute to give Virginia (8-5-4, 3-4-2 ACC) an upset victory over fourth-ranked Florida State (13-3-1, 6-2-1) on Friday night. The win was the first for the Cavaliers over a top-five team since the 2003 season.
Farrelly's seventh goal of the season came off of a failed attempted clear of a corner kick by the Seminoles. The shot came from 18 yards out.
The Cavaliers were outshot 12-11 but needed only two saves from Chantel Jones, who posted her third consecutive shutout.
Washington and Lee 2, Guilford 0
LEXINGTON -- Ainsley Daigle and Allie Espina scored second half goals to lead Washington and Lee (15-1-2) to the win over Guilford (7-12-1) in the ODAC quarterfinals. The Generals outshot Guilford 21-1 and will host Lynchburg on Wednesday in the semifinals.
Emily Leary posted one save for the Generals who also held a 15-0 edge in corner kicks.
Roanoke 6,
Bridgewater 1
Carmen Graves scored twice to pace host Roanoke (12-6) to a 6-1 win over Bridgewater (11-6-1) in the quarterfinals of the ODAC tournament. Ashley Manning gave the Maroons a 1-0 lead with less than two minutes to play in the first half and Graves scored the game-winner in the 48th minute.
McKenzie Garst assists on three of Roanoke's six goals, including the game-winner.
Roanoke travels to Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday for the conference semifinals.
FIELD HOCKEY
Washington and Lee 4, Roanoke 0
LEXINGTON -- Alex Caritis scored twice to lead Washington and Lee (10-6) to a win over Roanoke (2-14) in the quarterfinals of the ODAC tournament.
Sallie Armstrong and Grace McGee also scored for Washington and Lee, which outshot the Maroons 24-5 including 17-0 in the first half. Two W&L goalies did not face a shot on goal.
The Generals advance to play second-seeded Eastern Mennonite in the semifinals on Tuesday. Eastern Mennonite, the second seed, received a first round bye.
Virginia 2, Duke 1
CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Third-ranked Virginia (16-2, 3-2) scored two second half goals in an ACC victory over 14th-ranked Duke (9-9, 0-5). Paige Selenski and Michelle Vittese each scored a goal and added an assist for the Cavaliers.
Kim Kastuck stopped three shots in goal for the Cavaliers who held a 15-8 advantage in the shots column.
