Tar Heels edge Hokies

BLACKSBURG -- Jordan Graye scored his first goal of the season three minutes into the second half as No. 4 North Carolina defeated stubborn Virginia Tech 1-0 Saturday night during senior night.

Cameron Brown earned an assist on the play, as he got the ball to Graye, who took a few dribbles toward the goal and buried the ball into the right side of the net from just in front of the goalie's box on the left side of the field.

The first half was scoreless as the Tar Heels (10-2-2, 4-2-1) outshot the Hokies 6-5. UNC finished the game outshooting Tech 15-9, tallying five more shots on goal than Tech (4-9-2, 2-4-0).

MEN'S SOCCER

Hampden-Sydney 1, Washington and Lee 0

LEXINGTON -- Bryan Hughes scored in the 34th minute to lift Hampden-Sydney (14-3, 7-2) to an ODAC victory over Washington and Lee (4-6-4, 2-5-2).

Alex Lambert stopped four shots for the Generals.

Eastern Mennonite 2, Roanoke 1

Host Roanoke (11-4-3, 7-1) outshot the Royals (7-5-5, 5-2-2) 25-7 in the ODAC match, but gave up two goals to Mitchell Leap, the second in the 41st minute.

Roanoke got its goal from Michael Stark, his sixth.

Methodist 3, Ferrum 1

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Ferrum (2-11-1, 0-4) fell behind 3-0 to Methodist (7-8, 3-1) before getting a goal from Thomas Robinson in the 54th minute.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Randolph-Macon 1, Roanoke 0

Host Roanoke (10-6, 6-4) gave up a goal to Randolph-Macon's Ashley Malinowski in the 62nd minute of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference loss.

Roanoke outshot Randolph-Macon 23-9.

Virginia Wesleyan 7, Hollins 0

Kristen Norkus made 12 saves for Hollins (4-11-1) in an ODAC loss to Virginia Wesleyan.

High Point 1, VMI 0

HIGH POINT, N.C. -- A first-half goal by freshman Janay Whittaker was all that High Point (3-13-1, 2-3-1) would need in a win over VMI.

Angela Redmond made eight saves for the Keydets (5-10-0, 3-4-0).

FIELD HOCKEY

Bridgewater 2, Roanoke 1

Roanoke (2-13, 2-5) fell to visiting Bridgewater (9-8, 2-5) in its regular-season finale.

Roanoke was even with Bridgewater in shots (11-11) and shots on goal (4-4) in a hard-fought contest between both teams for an ODAC tournament spot.

Christina Pybus put Bridgewater on the board late in the first half off an assist from Brianna Jacques and held on for a 1-0 lead at the half.

With eight minutes left in the second half, Helen Pearsall scored her fourth goal of the season to tie the contest at 1-1. Kate McGuire was credited with her first assist of the season.

But three minutes later, the Eagles' Pybus found an open Allison Carr who scored the game-winner with just under five minutes remaining.

Virginia 2, Wake 0

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Third-ranked Virginia (15-2, 2-2) got second-half goals from Paige Selenski and Michelle Vittese to upend sixth-ranked Wake Forest (10-5, 1-3).

It was Virginia's 10th shutout of the season.

Washington and Lee 6, Virginia Wesleyan 0

VIRGINIA BEACH -- The Generals (9-6, 5-2) posted their sixth consecutive shutout.

Steph Mansey scored three times for Washington and Lee.

MEN'S TENNIS

UVa dominates; Tech eliminated

VIRGINIA BEACH -- The Virginia men's tennis team continued its dominating performance at the ITA Atlantic Regional.

The Cavaliers have all four singles semifinalists and three of the four doubles semifinalists at the tournament.

Virginia Tech was eliminated as the Hokies' five singles players and one doubles team suffered losses.

Tech frosh, 2 UVa players win

BLACKSBURG -- Two Virginia singles players and two doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals at the ITA Atlantic Regional.

Virginia Tech freshman Christin Newman, along with two Tech doubles teams, advanced.
