College football around the state: Keydets end 5-game losing streak
CLINTON, S.C. -- Howard Abegesah rushed for three touchdowns to lead VMI in a 31-20 win over Presbyterian on Saturday.
Abegesah ran for 165 yards on 25 carries for the Keydets (2-5, 1-3 Big South), and Kyle Hughes ran for 108 yards on 13 carries.
VMI took a 14-0 lead on 1-yard runs by Abegesah and Tim Maypray late in the opening quarter. After the Blue Hose (0-7, 0-2) pulled within seven on Myron Gary's 27-yard touchdown pass to Parker Fleming on a fake field goal, Abegesah's 37-yard score put VMI up 21-7 at halftime.
Abegesah's final touchdown run, a 12-yarder, pushed the VMI lead to 28-7 late in the third.
"We were still plagued with turning the football over," VMI coach Sparky Woods said. "If we don't turn the football over, I think it would have been an easier victory for us.
In the fourth, Trandon Dendy rushed for a 2-yard touchdown for Presbyterian and Lance Byrd added a 1-yarder, but it wasn't enough for the Blue Hose.
Presbyterian has lost 10 straight games, while the win snapped a five-game losing skid for VMI.
Washington and Lee 28,
Guilford 21
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Charlie Westfal scored on a 21-yard touchdown run with 3:39 left to give the Generals (3-5, 2-2) an ODAC road victory.
After jumping out to a 14-0 halftime lead, the Generals allowed Guilford (1-6, 0-3) to tie the score 35 seconds into the fourth quarter.
John Kavanaugh returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown to reclaim the lead for the Generals.
The Quakers returned a W&L fumble for a touchdown with 6:38 remaining to even the score at 21.
Jonathan Clemo (Salem) rushed for 82 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries, while Harrison Hudson (Salem) ran for 81 yards on eight carries and caught four passes for 38 yards and a touchdown.
Ferrum 19,
Shenandoah 13
WINCHESTER -- Ferrum (4-3, 2-2) scored 10 fourth-quarter points to rally for a USA South Conference victory over Shenandoah (1-6, 0-4).
Trailing 13-9 in the fourth quarter, the Panthers took the lead with 10:07 remaining on a Quintel Banks 4-yard touchdown run.
Scott Puschell hit a 26-yard field goal with just over seven minutes left.
Banks rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries, while Steven Harris had 122 yards on 11 carries for Ferrum. The Panthers ran for 347 yards on 47 attempts. Dennis Hardy intercepted two Shenandoah passes.
Gardner Webb 65,
Southern Virginia 0
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. -- Gardner-Webb racked up 633 yards total offense and led 20-0 after the first quarter and 34-0 at halftime in the win over Southern Virginia (1-7).
Quinton Garrus rushed for 41 yards on 14 carries and also caught four passes for 27 yards for Southern Virginia.
Richmond 34,
Massachusetts 12
RICHMOND -- Justin Forte scored two touchdowns and Richmond defeated Massachusetts.
The Spiders (7-0, 5-0 Colonial Athletic Association) intercepted the Minutemen six times and began three first-half drives inside the Massachusetts' 27-yard line.
Patrick Weldon had the Spiders' first interception, putting his team on the Minutemen 27. Following a 24-yard run by Eric Ward, Ben Keating gave Richmond a 7-3 lead on a 1-yard rush in the first quarter.
Forte finished with a career-high 28 carries for 118 yards as Richmond extended its winning streak to a Football Championship Subdivision-best 16 games and matched its best start in history.
William & Mary 24,
James Madison 3
WILLIAMSBURG -- R.J. Archer threw two touchdowns and Jonathan Grimes ran for a score to lead William and Mary over James Madison.
Archer was 15-for-22 with 127 yards and an interception, and Grimes rushed for 158 yards on 20 carries for the Tribe (6-1, 3-1 Colonial Athletic Association).
Archer connected with Rob Varno on a 9-yard touchdown pass to put the Tribe up 7-0 with 3:26 left in the opening quarter. Dixon Wright's 44-yard field goal pulled the Dukes (2-5, 0-4) within 7-3, but William and Mary ran off 17 unanswered points to seal the win.
Liberty 20,
Charleston Southern 13
CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Mike Brown threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Will Quarles with 3:40 remaining in the game to break a tie and lead Liberty to victory.
Brown's scoring pass capped a nine-play, 53-yard drive and helped the Flames (5-2, 2-0 Big South) remain undefeated in the conference.
Liberty held a 13-0 lead before Charleston Southern (2-5, 0-2) rallied to tie the score at 13 on A.J. Toscano's 11-yard pass to Kwame Krakue with 9:01 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Virginia Union 17,
Bowie State 16
RICHMOND -- Virginia Union (6-3, 4-1) scored 10 points in the final six minutes to beat visiting Bowie State (6-3, 5-1). Enrique Cox returned a fumble 54 yards for the game-winning touchdown with 2:17 to play in the game.
Old Dominion 38,
Savannah State 17
SAVANNAH, Ga. -- DeMarco Thomas threw three touchdown passes and Old Dominion defeated Savannah State.
Thomas, who was 14-of-20 for 198 yards, threw two TD passes in the first half as the Monarchs (6-2) took a 17-0 lead.
Mario Crawford had 102 yards rushing on 17 carries and Thomas ran for 55 yards for Old Dominion, which secured a winning season in its first year as a football program.
Florida A&M 34,
Norfolk State 20
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Curtis Pulley threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score to lead Florida A&M to a win over Norfolk State.
Florida A&M (5-2, 3-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) scored on its first five possessions to take a 31-13 halftime lead.
S.C. State 21,
Hampton 9
HAMPTON -- Malcolm Long threw three touchdown passes to lead South Carolina State to a victory over Hampton.
Long was 21-for-26 for 234 yards with two interceptions. He connected with Chris Massey on a 22-yard scoring pass, then hit Terrance Smith for a 13-yard touchdown to give the Bulldogs (6-1, 4-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) a 14-0 halftime lead.
Hampton (3-4, 2-3) drew within 14-9 on a 26-yard field goal by Jordan Stovall and a 1-yard touchdown run by LaMarcus Coker with 11:59 left.
Elizabeth City 38,
St. Paul's 12
SOUTH HILL -- Elizabeth City (6-3, 4-2) jumped out to a 17-0 first-half lead and held St. Paul's (3-5, 2-4) to 178 yards total offense.
Hampden-Sydney 21,
Catholic 7
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Hampden-Sydney (8-0, 5-0) scored 21 second-half points to beat ODAC-opponent Catholic (1-6, 0-3) on the road.
Trailing 7-0 at the break, Hampden-Sydney, the nation's 23rd-ranked team, tied the score with 10:03 left in the third on a Sean Cavanaugh 43-yard touchdown run.
With 10:45 left in the contest, Kirk Rohle scored the first of his two touchdowns, a 1-yard touchdown run, to put the Tigers ahead.
Rohle finished with 99 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries.
Bridgewater 38,
Emory & Henry 34
EMORY -- Thomas Tate's 54-yard touchdown run with 7:45 left to play lifted Bridgewater (5-2, 2-1) to the ODAC win over Emory & Henry (4-3, 0-3).
Behind 20-10 at halftime, the Eagles scored the first three touchdowns of the second half. After Rudy Jackson scored on an 80-yard run, the Eagles led 31-20 late in the third quarter.
Caleb Jennings scored a touchdown on a 42-yard run and Cain Ringstaff caught a 4-yard touchdown pass to give Emory & Henry a 34-31 lead midway through the fourth.
Tate finished with 177 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 23 carries. Bridgewater had 517 yards total offense.
Jennings finished with 195 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries for Emory & Henry.
Averett 38,
Methodist 7
DANVILLE -- Averett (5-2, 3-1) limited Methodist (2-5, 1-3) to 114 yards total offense and gave up Methodist's only score with less than six minutes to play in the USA South Conference win.
Dontavius Watson rushed for 98 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries for the Cougars. Both of his touchdowns came in the second quarter, helping Averett jump out to a 21-0 halftime lead.
Christopher Newport 14,
Greensboro 7
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Christopher Newport (4-3, 3-1) scored all of its points in the second half to beat Greensboro (3-4, 1-3) in the USA South Conference.
Greensboro led 7-0 at halftime after a Seth Adams 12-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Richardson.
Tunde Ogen got CNU on the board with 11:25 left in the third on a 35-yard touchdown run. Antonio Epps had a 4-yard touchdown run with 8:07 left to put CNU ahead.
Ogen rushed for 127 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries for the Captains.
Virginia State 34,
Lincoln 14
LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. -- Virginia State (5-4) got a 75-yard touchdown reception from Corey Young and an Alfred Ngauja 69-yard interception return for a touchdown to hold off host Lincoln (3-6).
