Radford snuffs Liberty in 2 OTs

Radford 94 | Liberty 82

LYNCHBURG -- The lights went out. The shot clock failed. A field goal sunk two minutes previously was called into question, then reviewed. The best freshman shooter in the country put up an airball.

It was a college basketball game that would not end on a tidy note.

But end Radford University's men's Big South Conference game at Liberty did, finally, two overtimes past the regularly scheduled conclusion, with the Highlanders winning 94-82.

"We just stuck together tonight, there's just nothing else to say," Radford guard Kenny Thomas said. "I am so happy, man, just so happy."

Thomas, a senior guard, scored 21 points to go with 12 rebounds and seven assists in 49 minutes as Radford snapped Liberty's 11-game Vines Center winning streak. Earlier this season, Radford severed a 14-game Presbyterian home victory string.

The Highlanders moved 10-10 and 7-2 in the league, good for second place in the standings. Liberty fell to 14-7, 5-4.

Seth Curry, Liberty's sensational freshman guard, canned six of 15 3-point shots and had a game-high 30 points, but he did not score in the second overtime and last scratched with the aforementioned disputed (whether it was the 2 it was or a 3) field goal with 2:58 left in the first overtime.

"We held him to 30," Radford assistant coach Ali Ton said with a sly grin.

"Once again, man, team defense," Thomas said. "He's a great player. He's going to score because he can really shoot. So we just did our best on him and we worked as a team. Whoever picked him up, we were always there to help."

Radford outrebounded Liberty 57-42 behind big Art Parakhouski, who had 16 to go with 22 points, six blocked shots and three assists in 50 minutes.

"How about Art, huh?" Radford coach Brad Greenberg said.

The other workhorse with 50 minutes served was point guard Amir Johnson, good for 16 points, four assists, and six rebounds.

Curry scored nine of his 12 first-half points in the first 4:13, nailing three of four 3-point shots. That was the flurry that carried the Flames to a 14-11 lead. Radford squeezed down tighter on its zone defenses and the shots didn't come as easily.

Liberty was limited to 34.4-percent shooting in the first half. Liberty's longest dry spell the Highlanders exploited for a 9-0 run and eventually a 28-18 lead. Liberty responded by scoring nine unanswered itself. Kyle Ohman could have tied it when he was fouled by Eric Hall as his trey was flipping the net with 2:00 showing. Ohman couldn't convert the foul shot on the four-point play.

Hall made up for it a few moments later by sinking a pair of free throws then contributing an offensive rebound and stickback in a 7-3 run to close the half. Another reserve, Chris McEachin chipped in the other two points in the charge that left the intermission score 35-30, Radford.

"This was all about being resilient and persistent," Greenberg said. "We battled an excellent team for 50 minutes and showed the mental toughness and teamwork we strive for."
