Syracuse rallies, defeats Cornell

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Jonny Flynn had 24 points, Paul Harris added 21 points and nine rebounds, and No. 16 Syracuse rallied to beat Cornell 88-78 on Wednesday night.

Cornell (4-4), playing its fifth straight road game, hasn't beaten Syracuse in 40 years, suffering 31 straight losses, but the Big Red staged a game fight behind a career-high 33 points from Ryan Wittman.

Syracuse (8-0) has displayed a penchant for poor play at the start of nearly every game, having rallied twice from 13 points down to win, and this night was no exception The Orange trailed the entire first half, once by 16, as center Arinze Onuaku, averaging 13 points a game, did not take a shot.

No. 3 Pittsburgh 78, Duquesne 51

PITTSBURGH -- Sam Young scored 23 points and DeJuan Blair was in control inside with 14 points and 17 rebounds, helping No. 3 Pittsburgh overcome a sluggish start to defeat city rival Duquesne.

Jermaine Dixon scored 12 points as the Panthers improved to 8-0 for the seventh consecutive season, using runs of 9-0 and 11-2 to begin pulling away after the Dukes (4-2) led 20-19 with seven minutes left in the first half.

No. 10 Tennessee 87, UNC Asheville 69

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tyler Smith had the first triple-double in school history, helping No. 10 Tennessee romp over UNC Asheville.

Smith finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, helping the Vols give coach Bruce Pearl career victory No. 400.

"It's pretty fitting Tyler Smith was the guy to do it because he may be the most productive player I have ever coached," Pearl said. "When you talk about most valuable players, Tyler is the glue."

In his fourth season at Tennessee and 17th overall, Pearl joined some legendary company by winning his 400th after coaching 509 games. Only Adolph Rupp, Clair Bee, Jerry Tarkanian, Roy Williams and Henry Iba reached the 400-victory plateau in fewer games.

No. 14 Xavier 81, Auburn 74

CINCINNATI -- B.J. Raymond scored a career-high 32 points against an Auburn defense that already knew better than to leave him open, and No. 14 Xavier remained undefeated with Sean Miller's 100th victory as coach.

The Musketeers (7-0) matched the third-best start in their history and their best since 1996-97, when they won their first 10 for the school record.

Bridgewater 55, W&L 42

BRIDGEWATER -- Michael Oblitey had 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Eagles (3-4, 1-0) over the Generals (5-3, 1-1).

WOMEN

Guilford 68, W&L 66, OT

LEXINGTON -- Ann Seufer hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:10 left in overtime as the Quakers (3-3, 2-1) beat the Generals (1-4, 1-1).
