James Madison clinches Colonial

TOWSON, Md. -- Rodney Landers rushed for 117 yards and three touchdowns, Griff Yancey ran for three scores and James Madison clinched the Colonial Athletic Association title with a 58-27 rout of Towson on Saturday.

Eugene Holloman gained 131 yards on 15 carries for the Dukes (10-1, 8-0), who piled up 440 rushing yards to 18 by Towson (3-9, 1-7). James Madison recorded a season-high in points and finished the regular season with 10 consecutive victories.

The Dukes will host a first-round playoff game next weekend. Seedings will be announced tonight.

Richmond 23, W&M 20

WILLIAMSBURG -- Andrew Howard's 37-yard field goal on the second possession of overtime lifted Richmond to a victory against William and Mary and into the Division I-AA playoffs.

William and Mary, which had a 39-yard field-goal attempt blocked to end the extra period's first series, will have to wait until today's selection show to see if it makes the playoffs for the first time since 2004.

The Tribe (7-4, 5-3 CAA) had just 12 yards on 24 plays in the first half, but outgained the Spiders (9-3, 6-2) 235-40 the rest of the way.

Derek Cox returned a punt 80 yards for a score to pull the Tribe within 20-13 with 3:02 to play and, after a successful onside kick, William and Mary drove 59 yards on 10 plays to tie the game on Bath County graduate Jacob Phillips' 1-yard sneak with 18 seconds left.

Norfolk St. 17, Winston-Salem 14

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- DeAngelo Branche's 4-yard touchdown with 13:43 remaining held up as the game-winner for Norfolk State, which came back to defeat Winston-Salem.

Branche rushed for 181 yards and his game-winning score on 21 carries for the Spartans (5-7), who outgained the Rams (3-8) 357-196. Dennis Brown completed 16 of 26 passes for 130 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Liberty 26, Elon 3

LYNCHBURG -- Rashad Jennings rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown to lead Liberty to a victory over Elon.

The Flames (10-2) accumulated 406 yards of total offense behind Jennings and Brock Smith, who was 17 of 26 for 273 yards.

Elon (8-4) was held to 267 yards.

Dominic Bolden scored Liberty's first touchdown on a 74-yard punt return and added six catches for 95 yards.

Mount Union 56, R-MC 0

ALLIANCE, OHIO -- Fueled by a 28-point first half and 290 yards rushing by Nate Kmic, No. 1 Mount Union cruised by Randolph-Macon in the first-round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.

Mount Union rolled up 676 yards and held R-MC (6-5) to just 207 yards. Raiders quarterback Greg Micheli completed 11 of 13 passes for 218 yards and a TD.

R-MC's Austin Faulkner was 14-of-31 for 154 yards.

W&J 35, CNU 29

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson built an 18-point, first-half lead and survived a late Christopher Newport (8-2) rally to earn a victory in the opening round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.

Bobby Swallow completed 17 of 26 passes for 258 yards and three touchdowns for the Presidents (10-1). Curt Jones gained 141 yards and ran for two TDs on 23 carries.

Tunde Ogun gained 160 yards on 29 totes and scored three touchdowns for the Captains.

Hampton 17, Morgan St. 13

BALTIMORE -- Dennis Mathis had 34 carries for a game-high 137 yards and Recardo Kemp scored on an interception return to help Hampton outlast Morgan State (6-6, 4-4 MEAC) in the season finale for both teams.

The Pirates (6-5, 5-3) snapped a four-game losing streak.
