N.C. Wesleyan blasts Ferrum; W&L falls in overtime

FERRUM -- Mike Vann rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns, but it wasn't nearly enough as North Carolina Wesleyan routed Ferrum 41-14 on Saturday in a USA South game.

Tyreck McFadden had 147 yards rushing and three TDs on 17 carries, and Stedman Mathis had 132 yards rushing and two scores on 22 carries to lead the Bishops (5-4, 4-2 USA South. Quarterback Bo Jordan was 18-of-26 passing for 311 yards and a TD.

Ferrum (7-2, 5-1) travels to Newport News next Saturday to take on Christopher Newport. The winner of that game will earn the USA South's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III playoffs.

E&H 17, W&L 14, OT

LEXINGTON -- Emory & Henry senior place-kicker Luke Hawk hit a 35-yard field goal in overtime to lift the Wasps to a win over Washington and Lee.

Washington and Lee (4-6, 1-5) was paced by Stuart Sitterson, who tallied 182 all-purpose yards en route to setting W&L records for season (2,096) and career (5,981) all-purpose yards, both of which were held by Chris Sullivan (2003).

Sitterson rushed 25 times for 70 yards and two touchdowns, had two catches for 41 yards and notched 71 return yards.

The Wasps (5-4, 3-2) were led by Caleb Jennings, who totaled 304 all-purpose yards and one touchdown.

W&M 38, Northeastern 17

WILLIAMSBURG -- Jacob Phillips (Bath County) moved into third place on William and Mary's all-time touchdown passing list as the Tribe defeated Northeastern. Phillips' 3-yard touchdown pass to Chase Hill with 2:51 left in the second quarter was the 55th of his career and gave William and Mary (7-2, 5-1 Colonial) a 21-10 lead.

Phillips was 15-of-22 for 217 yards and two touchdowns. He also scored on a 5-yard run.

Hampden-Sydney 38, Huntingdon 34

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Corey Sedlar threw for 489 yards and four touchdowns as Hampden-Sydney (8-1) handed Huntingdon (8-1) its first loss.

CNU 19, Averett 13

NEWPORT NEWS -- Christopher Newport's Jay Kirland picked off an Averett pass with under three minutes to play and the Captains (7-1, 6-0 USA South) ran out the clock to hold on for a victory over the Cougars (4-5, 3-3).

Running back Tunde Ogun had 32 carries for 228 of Christopher Newport's 364 yards of total offense.

Cumberlands 56, UVa-Wise 37

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- Cumberlands (9-1, 6-0), ranked No. 8 in the NAIA, amassed 396 yards rushing and six touchdowns to defeat No. 16 UVa-Wise and win the Mid-South Conference East Division. Randy Hippeard completed 24 of 46 passes for 425 yards and four touchdowns for the Highland Cavaliers (7-3, 4-2).

Webber Int'l 23, SVU 15

BUENA VISTA -- Southern Virginia saw its two-game winning streak end.

Tye Hiatt led the Knights (3-7) with 11 receptions for 115 yards and one touchdown Luke Taylor was 19-of-37 for 212 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

Richmond 34, Hofstra 14

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Josh Vaughan rushed for a career-best 240 yards and two touchdowns to lead Richmond to a win over Hofstra (3-7, 1-5 Colonial).

Quarterback Eric Ward completed 11 of 20 passes for 158 yards for the Spiders (7-3, 4-2).

B-CC 17, Hampton 6

HAMPTON -- Brian Sumlar rushed for 110 yards and a touchdown to lead Bethune-Cookman (7-2, 4-2 MEAC) to a victory over Hampton (5-4, 4-2).

R-MC 40, Bridgewater 18

ASHLAND -- Randolph-Macon (5-4, 3-2 ODAC) got 175 yards on the ground from Zak Thornton and the Yellow Jackets sacked Bridgewater (3-6, 2-3) quarterbacks six times as R-MC topped the Eagles.

Maryville 23, Shenandoah 20

MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- Derek Hunt ran for a touchdown and threw for another as Maryville (5-4, 4-2 USA South) defeated Shenandoah (2-7, 1-5).

Norfolk State 35, Morgan State 9

NORFOLK -- The Norfolk State (4-6, 3-4 MEAC) defense forced a season-high seven turnovers and scored two touchdowns in winning its second consecutive game.

Frostburg St. 20, Apprentice 7

FROSTBURG, Md. -- Bryan Brosnan tossed a pair of touchdown passes late in the second quarter to guide Frostburg State (3-5, 1-1 ACFC) to a victory over Apprentice (1-7, 0-3).
