W&L, Ferrum score conference victories

LEXINGTON -- First-year quarterback Charlie Westfal threw a pair of touchdown passes and ran for another score as Washington and Lee (4-1, 1-0) recorded its 11th-straight home win with a 28-16 victory over Randolph-Macon in an ODAC game on Saturday afternoon.

Westfal completed 8 of 13 passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns and rushed 17 times for 87 yards and a score. Stuart Sitterson carried the ball 28 times for 135 yards and one touchdown.

Austin Faulkner led the Yellow Jackets (2-3, 1-1) by completing 24 of 41 passes for 297 yards and two touchdowns.

Ferrum 30, Averett 9

DANVILLE -- Ferrum (4-1, 2-0) spotted Averett (1-3, 0-1) a 9-0 lead, but roared back in the second half for the USA South victory.

The Panthers seized momentum right before the half when quarterback Marcus Mayo found Marques Wilson for an 11-yard touchdown pass with 25 seconds left.

In the second half, Mayo (Rockbridge County) scored on runs of 7 and 3 yards. Mayo also ran for a two-point conversion and completed a pass to Quinn Tibbs for a two-point conversion in the second half.

Mayo led Ferrum in rushing with 66 yards on seven carries. He also completed two of four passes for 24 yards.

Steven Harris added 64 rushing yards on seven carries and Matt Lucas gained 63 yards on eight totes.

UVa-Wise 35, Georgetown 28

GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- James Haley picked off the Georgetown (1-3, 0-2) pass with 33 seconds left in the game to seal the 13th-ranked UVa-Wise Mid-South East road victory.

The interception came after Aric Evans caught a pass on a curl route for the Highland Cavaliers (4-1, 2-0) and ran 56 yards for the game-winning points with 1:25 left in the game.

Randy Hippeard completed 23 of 31 passes for 310 yards and three scores for UVa-Wise. Jason Lovett pulled in eight passes for 100 yards and had scoring catches of 11 and 17 yards.

JMU 56, Hofstra 0

HARRISONBURG -- Quarterback Rodney Landers rushed for 133 yards and accounted for four touchdowns to help James Madison rout Hofstra (2-3, 1-1 Colonial Athletic Conference).

Landers, who completed 7 of 13 passes for 92 yards, threw a 7-yard touchdown to Rockeed McCarter to give the Dukes (5-1, 3-0) a 21-0 lead in the second quarter.

Griff Yancey caught a 49-yard touchdown pass from Landers, who followed up that score with a 45-yard touchdown run then a 4-yard passing score to McCarter in the third to put James Madison ahead 42-0 in the third.

Hampden-Sydney 37, Bridgewater 34

BRIDGEWATER -- Bridgewater scored 28 fourth-quarter points, but Hampden-Sydney held on for the ODAC victory.

Corey Sedlar completed 26 of 44 passes for 412 yards for the Tigers. He threw five TD passes and just one interception. He had TD tosses of 71 yards to E.K. Smook, 20 yards to Zach Miller, 13 yards to Adam Gillette and 30 yards to Anthony Mancini to go along with the 51-yarder to Williams.

For the Eagles, Vince Reese completed nine of 23 passes for 150 yards and three touchdowns. David Argaud rushed for 84 yards on 10 carries.

E&H 28, Methodist 7

EMORY -- Caleb Jennings rushed for 214 yards and two touchdowns to lead Emory & Henry (2-2) over Methodist (1-3).

Jennings, who finished with 28 carries, scored on runs of 36 and 41 yards in the third quarter to break open a 7-6 lead by the Monarchs at halftime.

Jennings also scored a two-point conversion on a pass from Brent McDonald.

Methodist quarterback Erik Teague completed 21 of 37 passes for 235 yards and a touchdown. Villanova 38, W&M 28

WILLIAMSBURG -- Christopher Whitney scored four touchdowns and accounted for 246 total yards to help Villanova hold off William and Mary.

Whitney completed 20 of 27 passes for 186 yards and a career-high three touchdowns. He also had 19 carries for 60 yards and a score for the Wildcats (4-1, 2-0 Colonial Athletic Association).

R.J. Archer completed 21 of 37 passes for 307 yards with a touchdown and an interception, while rushing for two scores for the Tribe (2-2, 0-1).

W&M starting quarterback Jacob Phillips (Bath County) didn't play because of an injured foot, but he is expected to return to the field next weekend.

Hampton 17, Delaware State 14

DOVER, Del. -- Herbert Bynes threw a 26-yard touchdown to Justin Brown in the fourth quarter to lift Hampton to a victory over Delaware State.

On third-and-8 with 3:19 remaining in the game, Brown caught the pass and fought off four defenders to score for the Pirates (4-1, 3-0 MEAC).

Instead of attempting a game-tying field goal from 33 yards out on fourth down with 21 seconds left, Delaware State (1-3, 1-1) went for a touchdown. But Vashon Winton's pass went incomplete to turn it over on downs.

CNU 17, Shenandoah 7

WINCHESTER -- Tunde Ogun rushed for 195 yards and a touchdown as Christopher Newport (2-1, 1-0) downed Shenandoah (1-4, 0-2) in a USA South game.

Kevin Roberts gained 160 yards and scored a touchdown for the Hornets.

Liberty 43, Coastal Carolina 38

CONWAY, S.C. -- Brock Smith completed 15 of 24 passes for 239 yards and three touchdowns and Rashad Jennings ran for 195 yards and scored three TDs as Liberty (5-0, 1-0 Big South) outscored Coastal Carolina (3-3, 0-1).

Salisbury 48, Apprentice 17

NEWPORT NEWS -- Nationally-ranked Salisbury (4-1, 1-0) scored 27 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to pull away from Apprentice School for an Atlantic Central Football Conference victory.

Phil Caralla threw for 182 yards for the Builders (1-3, 0-1).

Elizabeth City St. 35, Virginia St. 7

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. -- Curtis Rich rushed for 62 yards and two touchdowns as Elizabeth City State defeated Virginia State.

Ricky Hill gained 100 yards on 12 carries for the Vikings (3-3, 3-0 CIAA).

Taron Hampton rushed for 137 yards on 21 carries for Virginia State (2-4, 1-2).
