State roundup: W&L blanked by F&M

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Franklin & Marshall (1-0) limited Washington and Lee to 51 yards of total offense and two first downs en route to a 24-0 victory over the Generals on Saturday afternoon.

The game took place at the height of Tropical Storm Hanna and featured strong winds and heavy rain as W&L was shut out for the first time since a 42-0 loss at Wilkes in the 2006 NCAA playoffs. This was the 20th straight time W&L lost a season opener on the road.

Stuart Sitterson led the Generals (0-1) with 191 all-purpose yards. He rushed 20 times for 23 yards and amassed 168 yards on returns.

Bridgewater 34, Averett 13

DANVILLE -- Travis Marks and T.J. Montague returned interceptions for touchdowns, helping Bridgewater to a victory over Averett (0-1).

Ahead 12-0 after two scoring passes by Hagan Driskell, Marks returned a pick 23 yards for a touchdown for the Eagles (1-0). With less than 3 minutes left before halftime, Montague raced 36 yards for a 24-0 lead.

Driskell finished 12-of-23 for 187 yards and three TDs.

SVU 55, Lincoln, Pa. 25

BUENA VISTA -- Luke Taylor threw for three TDs and ran for another as the Knights (1-1) overwhelmed Lincoln, Pa. (1-1).

Taylor, who finished 17-of-24 for 246 yards, connected with Tye Hiatt from 18 and 49 yards out and from 13 yards to Brett Petty. He also scored on a 1-yard keeper.

JMU 56, N.C. Central 7

HARRISONBURG -- Rodney Landers and Griff Yancey each scored two touchdowns to lead James Madison to victory.

Landers passed for 164 yards and added 31 yards on the ground for the Dukes (1-1).

Liberty 44, Glenville State 27

LYNCHBURG -- Wide receiver Dominic Bolden scored three touchdowns as the Flames (2-0) defeated Glenville State (1-1).

Bolden and Brock Smith hooked up on TD passes of 72 and 28 yards. Bolden also returned a punt 72 yards for a score.

King's, Pa. 34, Randolph-Macon 13

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. -- Jeramia Jones rushed for 192 yards and four TDs as King's College defeated Randolph-Macon.

Jones, who ran the ball 34 times, scored on runs of 7, 3 45 and 49 yards for the Monarchs (1-0).

Zak Thornton gained 121 yards on 30 carries for Randolph-Macon (0-1).

St. Paul's 13, Chowan 0

PETERSBURG -- Jermaine Williams ran 62 yards for a touchdown for Saint Paul's (1-1) at the 4:57 mark of the first quarter and later Todd Shelton rushed one in from 49 yards. Williams finished with 72 yards rushing on 14 carries for the Tigers.

S. Illinois 37, Hampton 31

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Herbert Bynes completed 30 of 47 passes for 403 yards and two touchdowns, but the Pirates (1-1) fell to the 12th-ranked Salukis.

Kentucky 38, Norfolk St. 3

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Freshman Randall Cobb threw for one touchdown and ran for two others in relief of Mike Hartline, and Kentucky (2-0) dominated Norfolk State in its home opener.

Norfolk State (1-1) got its lone points shortly before halftime on a 24-yard Justin Castellat field goal.

Catholic 23, Shenandoah 20, OT

WINCHESTER -- Sean Green scored on a 27-yard pass from Dan Jones in overtime as Catholic (1-0) defeated the Hornets (0-1).

Virginia Union 35, West Virginia Wesleyan 21

RICHMOND -- Lamar Little threw touchdown passes of 14 yards to Phillip Taylor and 23 yards to Michael Hampton in the Panthers' victory.
