Cavs rally for men's soccer victory
FAIRFAX, Va. -- The Virginia men's soccer team rallied from a two-goal halftime deficit to beat George Mason 3-2 in overtime Saturday.
Brian Ownby scored the game-winning goal for the Cavaliers (1-2-0) in the 110th minute. Jimmy Simpson scored the game-tying shot at the 77th minute.
The Patriots (1-1-1) got their first-half goals from Lucas Pardew and Ryan Gracia to take a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Roanoke 4, Franklin & Marshall 0
ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Shaman Douglass scored twice and dished out an assist, and Adam Thompson recorded his third shutout of the season to lead Roanoke on the first day of the Brothers Pizza Blue Jay Classic held at Elizabethtown.
The Maroons out shot the Diplomats 20-4.
East Tennessee State 2, VMI 1
LEXINGTON -- The Keydets dropped their home opener to the visiting Buccaneers.
Freshman Patrick Karnwie scored the first goal of the game, beating East Tennessee State keeper James Holt to give VMI (0-2) a 1-0 lead at the 2-minute mark. The goal was the Keydets' first of the season, and came off a right-to-left pass from Brian Harding.
The Buccaneers (2-1) tied it late in the opening half and took the lead early in the second half.
Washington and Lee 2, Shenandoah 0
LEXINGTON -- The Generals scored two goals in the second half to win their home-opener.
W&L (1-0) midfielder drew Crowley broke the scoreless tie in the second half when he found the back of the net off a corner kick from Whit Larkin at 63:11. Huntley Johnson added an insurance goal with 48 seconds remaining in the game.
The Hornets fall to 1-4.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Washington and Lee 3, Centre 1
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Anne Van Devender scored the game-winning goal to lead the Generals (1-0) past the Colonels (0-2) in the Glenn Hyundai College Classic.
The Colonels scored unassisted in the 41st minute, but the Generals answered less than 3 minutes later when Hannah Deming connected with Corinne Smith to tie the game at 1-1 going into the half.
Van Devender put W&L up at in the 61st minute, and Katie Kern added the insurance goal a few minutes later.
VMI 3, Campbell 1
LEXINGTON -- The Keydets jumped out to an early lead when Campbell had an own goal on a Megan Strand corner kick.
Campbell (0-2-2) tied the game in the 61st minute before the Keydets stepped up on the attack, holding an 8-4 advantage in shots the rest of the way.
Olivia Moore scored the game-winner on a penalty kick for VMI (1-2). A.J. Baker tacked on an insurance goal.
Roanoke 3, Methodist 1
Margaret Houston scored the first goal of the game on an assist from Meredith Grunewald to put the Maroons up 1-0.
After Methodist evened the score, Grunewald scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Sara Farmer, putting the Maroons (1-2) up 2-1 over the Monarchs (0-1) at halftime.
Roanoke's Kristen McCoy scored the final goal with 30 seconds remaining off a second assist from Grunewald.
FIELD HOCKEY
Centre 2, Washington and Lee 1
DANVILLE, Ky. -- The Generals dropped their season opener to Centre.
Christina Merchant scored the only goal for Washington and Lee. Kelly Tran had the assist. Tran also made six saves for W&L (0-1).
CROSS COUNTRY
Maroons go 1-2
LEXINGTON -- The Washington and Lee men's and women's teams won at the W&L Invitational.
Roanoke College's Alex Knutsen and Ian Robinson placed first and second, respectively, to lead the Maroons to a second-place finish. Vance Berry placed third to lead the Generals.
The W&L women were led by Elizabeth Webb. The Roanoke College women finished third overall.
Virginia sweeps
CHARLOTTESVILLE -- The Virginia men's and women's cross country teams opened their season with victories at the Lou Onesty Invitational, sweeping the top three spots and also claiming fifth.
UVa's Trey Miller won the men's race, finishing the 8K race in 24 minutes, 53.80 seconds.
Lauretta Dezubay led the Cavalier women, winning the 5K race in 17:55.01.
