Late goal lifts Cavaliers
ATHENS, Ga. -- The seventh-ranked Virginia women's soccer team used a second half goal by Kelly Quinn to down No. 22 Georgia 1-0 on Friday.
The Cavaliers (4-0) dominated in the first half but couldn't turn field position advantage into a score.
UVa outshot the Bulldogs 10-2 before the half and had a 9-2 corner kick edge.
Virginia scored in the 69th minute on a corner kick from Caitlin Miskel, who sent the ball to the near post where Quinn flicked a header past the keeper for her third goal of the season.
The Cavaliers won their first four games for the first time since the 2004 season. That year was also the last time that Virginia had four shutouts to start the year.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Texas A&M 3, Virginia Tech 1
BLACKSBURG -- The Aggies scored two goals in the second half to put away the Hokies in the second game of the Hawthorne Suites Hokie Invitational.
Sophomore Marika Gray scored for Virginia Tech to tie the game in the first half for her third goal of the season, beating two defenders.
Aggies senior Laura Robinson scored late in the match to put Texas A&M ahead.
Wake Forest defeated George Washington 2-0 in Game 1.
Radford 3, Mount Saint Mary's 0
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- McKenzie Vergara and Ashley Johnson each scored a goal and set up another as Radford (2-0-1) defeated Mount Saint Mary's (0-4) on the first day of the of the Thundering Herd Nike Invitational Friday at Marshall University.
Kathleen Jarvis gave the Highlanders the first goal of the game with a strike in the 19th minute. Vergara and Johnson both assisted on the score.
The Highlanders finished with a 17-9 advantage in shots.
FIELD HOCKEY
Virginia 8, Vermont 2
CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Traci Ragukas had a hat trick to lead the Cavaliers past the Catamounts.
Freshman Michelle Vittese added two scores, while Inge Kaars Sijpestein, Paige Selenski and Floor Vogels also scored for No. 11 UVa (3-0).
The Cavaliers' eight goals are the most during head coach Michele Madison's tenure. The last time UVa scored eight goals was in 2004. Virginia's last hat trick came during the 2006 season.
California 4, Radford 0
FARMVILLE, Va. -- The Bears shut out the Highlanders in the NORPAC Conference opening game for Radford.
Highlanders goalkeeper Megan Stucke made 13 saves for Radford (0-3, 0-1), including seven in the game's first 22 minutes.
MEN'S SOCCER
Hofstra 4, Virginia Tech 1
BLACKSBURG -- Brett Carrington scored two goals to lead the Pride past the Hokies.
Justin Flood and Johannes Grahn also scored for Hofstra (1-1-1).
Luiz Yamashita added the Hokies' lone goal.
Radford 2, Xavier 0
RADFORD -- Emmanuel Joseph scored two goals on two shots to lead the Highlanders past the Musketeers.
Both of Joseph's goals came in the first half, and the Radford defense held Xavier to only three shots on goal in the second half.
