Maroons, Knight cited

Roanoke College first baseman Kelsey Ruitenberg has been named to the small-college all-state first team by the sports information directors of Virginia colleges.

The Maroons were represented on the second team by second baseman Tamara Poles, shortstop Loren Messick and outfielder Hillary Hudgins. Southern Virginia designated player Ashley Kazimer also made the second team.

UVa’s Schwimer recognized

Virginia senior reliever Michael Schwimer has been named a third-team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Schwimer went 3-1 with 14 saves and a 1.72 ERA this year. He was chosen by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 14th round of the major-league amateur draft last week.
