Tincher set for pro gig
Next month, Angela Tincher will pitch against the U.S. Olympic team twice in three days.
The former Virginia Tech ace said Thursday she has signed with National Pro Fastpitch's Akron Racers, who drafted her in February.
Tincher, who threw a no-hitter to help Tech upset the U.S. team 1-0 in March, will pitch for a squad of regional standouts against the U.S. team on July 24 at Kiwanis Field in Salem. The James River graduate is scheduled to throw three innings.
The Racers will host the Olympians two days earlier. Racers general manager Joey Arrietta said Tincher will also pitch three innings in that game.
"People [in Akron] are going to want to see that matchup," Arrietta said Thursday. "I don't want to disappoint the fans in Salem, and I certainly don't want to disappoint the fans in Akron, so I think if we did a 3-3 split, we don't wear her down."
Tincher, who will return to Tech in the fall as a graduate assistant, signed a two-year contract.
"She's the first player I've ever signed to a multiyear contract," Arrietta said. "The reason for the multiyear contract was to be able to build a team around Angela."
Tincher did not reveal her salary, but Arrietta said she will be one of the team's highest-paid players. The salary cap for an entire NPF team is $100,000. Arrietta said Tincher can also make money outside of her Racers contract from clinics and camps.
Tincher will join the Racers on Monday. She will make her debut in Akron's home opener Wednesday against Washington. It will be "Angela Tincher Night" at Firestone Stadium.
"Mentally, I think I'm ready to start again," Tincher said. "[Wednesday] I tossed a little bit."
Tincher will start two of the team's four games each week.
Jennie Finch and the NPF's other big stars are off playing for the U.S. team this summer.
"Jennie Finch ... is a great ambassador," Arrietta said. "Angela has that same persona."
