Tech golfer, UVa continue
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Virginia Tech's Jurrian van der Vaart advanced to the NCAA Men's Golf Championships after finishing tied for sixth at the East Regionals on Saturday.
The senior shot an even-par 71 in the final round to finish with a three-round total of 7-under 206.
Virginia Tech finished at 6-over 858 as a team, which did not put them in the top 10 where the Hokies needed to be to advance.
Virginia will be moving on as the Cavaliers finished at 3-under 849 for 10th place and became the last team to advance.
Virginia Tech freshman Aaron Eckstein shot an even-par 71 in the final round to finish at 12-over, while James River native Marshall Bailey finished at 14-over after shooting a 6-over 77 on the final day.
BASEBALL
Duke 7, Virginia Tech 5
BLACKSBURG -- The Hokies' Sean Ryan hit his first career home run in the ninth inning, but the comeback bid fell short as Virginia Tech (23-32, 6-24 ACC) lost its season finale to the Blue Devils (37-18-1, 10-18-1).
Sean O'Brien ends his career as the only player in Virginia Tech history to lead the team in hitting all four of his seasons.
Georgia Tech 9, Virginia 7
CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Tony Plagman was 5-for-5, finishing with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored as the Yellow Jackets (38-17, 16-14 ACC) held off a late UVa rally.
Greg Miclat had three hits and three runs scored and Dan Grovatt had three hits and three RBIs for the Cavaliers (36-19, 15-15).
VMI 10, Charleston Southern 2
LEXINGTON -- The Keydets scored five runs in the second inning on four singles and two errors by the Buccaneers (18-33, 6-14 Big South).
Sam Roberts and Jordan Ballard both had two hits and three RBIs for VMI (28-24, 13-7).
Coastal Carolina 18, Radford 8
RADFORD -- David Sappelt hit three home runs and tallied seven RBIs and David Anderson went 5-for-6, including his 17th homer of the season, to lead the Chanticleers (43-11, 17-3 Big South).
Jonathan Spears and Reggie Keen each homered and Raphael Turner had a bases-clearing triple for Radford (22-30, 6-14).
WOMEN'S TENNIS
W&L's Caire, Tabb fall at NCAAs
SAINT PETER, Minn. -- Sophomore Lauren Caire and junior Katie Tabb's seasons came to an end at the NCAA Division III Championships.
In singles, Caire lost in the quarterfinals to Grace Baljon of Williams 6-7, 4-6.
Caire then paired with Tabb and the duo fell in the quarterfinals to Amy Stolach and Jennifer Chui of Carnegie Mellon 5-7, 6-3, 4-6.
Caire and Tabb ended the season 25-3 as a tandem, while Caire completed her singles season 25-4.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Hamilton 11, Salisbury 10
Four Continentals scored two goals apiece as Hamilton (20-1) held off a late Salisbury surge at Roanoke College to advance to their first ever NCAA Division III championship game.
Robyn Bishop scored four goals for Salisbury (22-1).
Franklin & Marshall 14, College of New Jersey 12
Sarah Meisenberg notched five goals and two assists and Mary Blake Hargest and Jen Pritchard each scored three goals as the Diplomats (19-1) earned the other spot in the championship game.
Karen Doane tallied five goals for the College of New Jersey (17-2).
SOFTBALL
UW-Whitewater 4, Rhode Island College 1
Meghann Brennfleck's two-run homer in the third inning helped the Warhawks (36-10) stay alive in the NCAA Division III Championship at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem.
Rhode Island College's season ended with a record of 36-9.
Louisiana College 3, Cortland State 1
Amber Thomas' two-run single during a three-run third inning as the Wildcats (44-5) used a solid pitching effort from Kelly Williams to move past Cortland State (39-12) and advance to the semifinals.
UW-Eau Claire 5, Muskingum 1
After allowing Muskingum (41-11) score a run in the first inning, the Blugolds calmed down.
UW-Eau Claire (34-11) scored twice in the fifth inning. After loading the bases in the seventh, the team scored three straight times on a hit-by-pitch and two walks to advance to the semifinals.
Ithaca 4, Lynchburg 0
Nicole Cade tossed a five-hit shutout as Ithaca (35-11) ended the season of second-seeded Lynchburg (39-8).
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Hokies kick off Mediterranean trip
PALESTRINA, Italy -- Virginia Tech started off its trip to Italy a little sluggish falling behind early 13-2, but the Hokies settled down en route to a 75-62 win over Acquario Palestrina.
Brittany Cook finished with 23 points, nine rebounds and five assists to lead the Hokies.
TRACK & FIELD
Harrison breaks own school record
ATLANTA -- Sophomore Queen Harrison bested her own 400-meter dash school record, finishing in 52.88 seconds at the Georgia Tech Invitational.
The Hokies took three of the top five spots in the women's 100 hurdles as Harrison won, Kristi Castlin took second and Sherlenia Green finished fifth.
Britni Spruill finished second in the 100 with a season-best 11.56.
Brittany Pryor won the shot put with a throw of 50-feet, 9 14-inches.
UVa sweeps discus; VMI's Kitur makes finals
PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Cavaliers' Yemi Ayeni and Billie-Jo Grant won the men's and women's discus throws respectively at the IC4A/ECAC Championships.
Ayeni won with a toss of 196-feet, 2-inches, while Grant's toss was 178-6.
VMI's Felix Kitur qualified for the finals of the 800-meter run, while VMI's 1,600 relay team of Matt Sagar, Donnie Cowart, Corey Houck and Anthony Harris also qualified.
