W&L's Caire a double winner

SAINT PETER, Minn. -- Washington and Lee's Lauren Caire advanced to the quarterfinals of both the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships on Friday.

In doubles, Caire teamed with Katie Tabb to defeat Sallie Katter and Kasey Kuenzli of Linfield College 6-1, 6-3. In singles, Caire topped Chapman University's Elizabeth Lewis 6-3, 6-3, in the first round and then downed Leslie Hansen of MIT 6-3, 6-0, in the second round.

Kelly Will lost to sixth-seeded Marissa Lin of the University of Chicago 6-2, 3-6, 1-6 in the opening round, while the second-seeded Tabb lost to Meghan McCooey of Tufts 6-1, 5-7, 2-6, in the initial round.

Virginia 4, Michigan 0

TULSA, Okla. -- Top-seeded Virginia (31-0) advanced to the NCAA tournament quarterfinals for the fourth consecutive year with a win over No. 16 Michigan (20-7) in a round of 16 match.

Virginia will meet Baylor in the quarterfinals Sunday. Match time is 1 p.m.

GOLF

W&L 16th; James 3rd

BRASELTON, Ga. -- Washington and Lee carded a final round 308 and finished 16th out of 35 teams at the NCAA Division III Golf Championships held at the Chateau Elan Resort.

The Generals completed the four-day event with a 104-over 1,240 on rounds of 323-315-294-308. St. John's won with a score of 314-291-296-291--1,192 (+56).

Nathaniel James finished with an 8-over 292 on rounds of 73-74-72-73, which tied him for third.

Hokies 15th

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Virginia Tech shot a second-round 291 and is in 15th place entering the final round of the NCAA East Regional at the 6,961-yard, par 71 Council Fire Golf Club.

The Hokies have a two-round total of 572. Tech is seven strokes out of 10th place, the position needed to advance to the NCAA Championships in two weeks.

Jurrian van der Vaart shot a 3-under 68. He has a two-day total of 135 and is tied with three other players for fourth place.

Virginia is in 16th place at 573.

Kasza ties for 16th

WAVERLY, Iowa -- Vicki Kasza of Hollins tied two other golfers for 16th, carding a 72-hole total of 313, during the NCAA Division III Women's Championship at Centennial Oaks Golf Club. Kasza shot rounds of 76, 76, 78 and 83.

BASKETBALL

Lynchburg hires Scott

LYNCHBURG -- Roanoke alum and former Penn State assistant Hilliary Scott was named the new head men's basketball coach at Lynchburg College.

One of just seven Maroons to have his number retired, Scott, who was inducted into the RC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004, has been an assistant coach at Penn State for the last five seasons.

TRACK

Maroons win 5 events at EMU Last Chance meet

HARRISONBURG -- Roanoke College's Dominique McCoy secured her trip to the NCAA Championships next week with an automatic qualifying jump of 19-feet, 34-inch at the EMU Last Chance Qualifier.

She is one of only two RC ladies to ever break the 19-foot barrier and tied the school and ODAC record held by teammate JaLeesa Osborne.

Katie Suehs threw a personal-best in the discus, winning the event with a toss of 125-foot-9. She also finished second in the hammer throw with a distance of 138-3.

Robin Yerkes won the 100 meters in 12.38 seconds and the 200 in 25.09. Her time in the 200 was a new EMU facility record.

Andy Nagel won the 400- hurdles in 55.12, six seconds faster than the second-place finisher.

Washington and Lee's Elizabeth Webb took home the gold in the 800 meters in a school-record and facility-record time of 2:17.34, while Michael Keenan also won the javelin with a toss of 45.70 meters.

UVa's Garcia wins ECAC steeplechase

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Stephanie Garcia led Virginia in the opening day of the ECAC/IC4A Outdoor Track and Field Championships by winning the steeplechase.

The sophomore led a pack of 10 runners who met NCAA regional qualifying times, while her time of 10:19.74 was almost 12 seconds faster than the second-place finisher.

WRESTLING

VMI heavyweight lauded

LEXINGTON -- Following a freshman campaign that saw him win a Southern Conference title and win a match at the NCAA National Championships, VMI heavyweight Josh Wine has been named to the all-rookie first team by Amateur Wrestling News.

Wine becomes the first VMI wrestler to earn the honor. He was VMI's first freshman heavyweight to win a Southern title since Leslie Apedoe in 1996.

BASEBALL

Virginia Tech 8, Duke 5

BLACKSBURG -- Justin Wright improved to 4-0 by scattering five runs on 12 hits and three walks in eight innings. He struck out four.

Matt Hacker and Sean O'Brien had two hits apiece for the Hokies (23-31, 6-23 ACC). O'Brien hit a two-run homer in the third.

Duke (36-18-1, 9-18-1) was eliminated from the ACC tournament with the loss.

Georgia Tech 14, Virginia 8

CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Georgia Tech (37-17, 15-14 ACC) racked up 19 hits in a victory over Virginia.

Jeremy Farrell had his first two-home run game for Virginia (36-18, 15-14) -- giving him 11 home runs this season -- while he drove in three runs.

Coastal 10, Radford 4

RADFORD -- Nick Minter went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, but the Highlanders (22-29, 6-13) lost to the No. 14 Chanticleers (42-11, 16-3).

Alex Gregory also had two hits for Radford.

VMI 14, Charleston Southern 3

LEXINGTON -- Justin Topping went 3-for-5 with four RBIs as the Keydets (27-24, 12-7) routed the Buccaneers.

Brian Sandrige homered and had three RBIs for VMI.

SOFTBALL

UW-Eau Claire 8, Ithaca 0

Jenny Ross (24-2) allowed just three hits and struck out five in the Wisconsin-Eau Claire (33-11) win in the NCAA Division III Softball Championships at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem.

Ross also scored a run and drove in two.

Erica Cutspec was 2-for-3 for Ithaca (34-11).

Cortland State 5, UW-Whitewater 4

Cortland State (39-11) picked up a come-from-behind victory with a seventh-inning single by Brooke Weidman to defeat Wisconsin-Whitewater (35-10).

Katie Finch (22-7) got the win, scattering seven hits and three walks. She permitted four runs -- three earned -- and fanned five.

Lauren Cruz hit a two-run home run and finished with three RBIs for Whitewater (35-10).

Louisiana College 1, Rhode Island College 0

McCaslin Carson (18-3) hit a solo home run in the second inning and made it stand up by throwing a one-hitter for Louisiana College (43-5).

Kayla Jandreau had the lone hit for Rhode Island (36-8).

Muskingum 1, Lynchburg 0

Amy Mattin (29-6) blanked Lynchburg on four hits in the Muskingum (41-10) victory.

Jessica Bosway drove in Mary Margaret Boda with the game-deciding run in the second inning.

Tara Campbell went 2-for-3 for the Hornets (39-7). Katie Bruce (21-3) took the loss despite surrendering just three hits and a walk. She struck out one.
