No crown for W&L
ST. PETER, Minn. -- The Washington and Lee women's tennis team fell just short of winning its second straight NCAA Division III championship, falling to Williams in a 5-4 thriller Thursday.
Top-seeded W&L (28-1) saw its 40-match winning streak come to an end.
Meg Spalitta of W&L won 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles to tie the score at 4, but Nicole Reich beat W&L's Leah Weston 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 at No. 4 singles to give the third-seeded Ephs (21-3) the crown.
GOLF
Tech 8th after 1st round
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The Virginia Tech men recorded a 3-under-par 281 in the first round of the NCAA East Regional and are tied for eighth. Virginia shot a 286 and is tied for 17th.
Tech's Jurrian van der Vaart is tied for seventh with a 67.
Kasza tied for 11th
WAVERLY, Iowa -- Hollins' Vicki Kasza shot a 6-over 78 and is tied for 11th after the third round of the NCAA Division III women's championships.
W&L climbs to 15th
BRASELTON, Ga. -- Washington and Lee shot a 294 in the third round and climbed to 15th place in the NCAA Division III championships. W&L's Nathaniel James is in third place.
BASEBALL
Duke 4, Virginia Tech 2
BLACKSBURG -- Duke scored twice in the ninth inning on two of Tech pitcher Rhett Ballard's seven hit batsmen.
Virginia 4, Georgia Tech 2
CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Cavs pitcher Matt Packer scattered five hits and gave up one run over seven innings.
