W&L reaches D-III semis
ST. PETER, Minn. -- Leah Weston and Rebecca Timmis won their No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches to send defending national champion Washington and Lee into the semifinals with a 5-3 victory over host No. 16 Gustavus Adolphus (24-9) on Tuesday at the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships.
Weston defeated Sam Frank 6-4, 6-4 and Timmis beat Erica Dobson 6-2, 6-1.
Lauren Caire and Katie Tabb, as well as Virginia Dickinson and Kelly Will, teamed to win their doubles matches 8-3 for the No. 1 Generals (27-0), who play Denison today at 2 p.m.
Claire also won at No. 3 singles for W&L.
GOLF
W&L tied for 22nd
BRASELTON, Ga. -- Washington and Lee carded an opening-round score of 323 and is tied for 22nd out of 35 teams at the NCAA Division III Golf Championships at the Chateau Elan Resort.
The Generals trail leader La Verne by 33 strokes and are led by Nathaniel James, who is tied for ninth after firing a 2-over 73. James trails individual leader Scott Harris of St. John Fisher by five strokes.
Hollins' Kasza in 5th
WAVERLY, Iowa -- Hollins' Vicki Kasza was in fifth place after posting a 4-over 76 during the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championships.
Rhodes College's Stephanie Mingos leads after carding a 1-under 71.
BASEBALL
Virginia Tech 10, W&M 5
BLACKSBURG -- Virginia Tech (22-30) collected five doubles in building a 7-2 lead after two innings and went on to a 15-hit game that saw six Hokies finish with two or more hits.
Sean Ryan led Tech with a 3-for-5 outing that included a double, two runs scored and a RBI. Jose Cueto had a home run, a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Klint Reed, Matt Hacker, Austin Wates, and Chris Kay also had two hits.
Radford 3, Longwood 1
FARMVILLE -- Three Radford pitchers combined on a five-hitter as the Highlanders (22-28) defeated the Lancers (22-26-1).
Cassidy McDaniel got the win, allowing four hits, an unearned run and a walk in six innings. He struck out three.
T.J. Woody permitted a hit and walk in two innings and John Lloyd got his second save, allowing only a walk in the ninth.
Ben Toth and Nick Minter had two hits apiece for Radford.
Virginia 6, VMI 5 (11 )
CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Virginia (35-17) scored single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to send its game with VMI to extra innings, then won it in the 11th inning on a John Barr single, coupled with a VMI (26-23) throwing error.
Greg Miclat led UVa, going 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Sam Roberts and Jordan Ballard had two hits apiece in the Keydets.
