In the region: Hokies get split
BLACKSBURG -- Austin Wates' RBI double in the eighth inning broke a tie game, and the Virginia Tech baseball team held on through one more inning to upset No. 1 Miami 7-6 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday at English Field.
Miami came back to take the second game 9-2.
The Hokies (21-30, 5-22) trailed by as many as four runs, but a strong pitching performance from Justin Wright kept Tech within striking distance.
Wright scattered nine hits and struck out seven while pitching all nine innings.
Klint Reed had three hits, including a home run and two-run single, in the victory.
The Hurricanes (41-6, 22-3) came out swinging in the second game, scoring four runs in the first two innings.
BASEBALL
No. 2 UNC 5, No. 24 UVa 2
CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Rob Wooten gave up just one hit in 423 innings of relief to help the Tar Heels (42-8, 20-5) pick up another win on the road.
The Cavaliers (33-17, 13-13) went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
VMI 9, Maryland-Eastern Shore 1
LEXINGTON -- Sam Roberts went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, while Trey Braham gave up five hits over seven innings to lead the Keydets (25-22).
Radford 5-3, Winthrop 0-5
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Jonathan Spears and Ty Rivers each had three hits to lead Radford over Winthrop in the first game.
Nick Minter had a home run as the Highlanders lost Game 2.
MEN'S TENNIS
Cavaliers win opener
CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Sanam Singh, Michael Shabaz and Ted Angelinos all won their matches, as the top-seeded Cavaliers cruised to a 4-0 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson in the opening round of the NCAA tourney.
Radford falls
ATHENS, Ga. -- The Radford men's tennis team fell to the fifth-seeded Georgia Bulldogs 4-0 in an opening round match.
Hokies advance
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Virginia Tech moved on in NCAA tourney, winning its first postseason match since 2002 by downing Kentucky 4-0.
The Hokies (16-8) will face No. 8 Tennessee -- the sub-region host at 2 p.m. today.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Amherst 10, Washington & Lee 8
LANCASTER, Pa. -- Amy Craig and Maddie Hoeg each scored four goals to lead Amherst (15-3) past Washington & Lee (17-3) in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
GOLF
Kim leads Cavaliers' charge to finals
ATHENS, Ga. -- Freshman Joy Kim fired a 4-under par 68 to lead the Virginia women's golf team to a fifth-place finish in the NCAA Eas t Regional and earn a spot in the NCAA Championships.
Kim, who had struggled for much of the tournament, birdied five out of her final nine holes to finish in a tie for seventh place.
Decker 2nd at four-ball
SUFFOLK -- Robert Bradshaw of Suffolk and Roger W. Newsom of Virginia Beach shot a 65 and held off Martinsville's Keith Decker and Ryan Stinnett of Amherst for a two-stroke win in the VSGA Four-Ball Championship at Cedar Point Country Club.
