In the region: Carlson eclipses Radford hits record
ELON, N.C. -- Ashley Carlson broke Radford University's career hits record as the Highlanders swept a softball doubleheader from Elon.
Radford (37-13) won 4-2 and 14-2. Elon fell to 21-21.
Carlson now has 241 hits, topping the mark of 240 set by Melissa Pickel from 1995-99.
Jefferson Forest graduate Cassie Rhodes stole three bases in the first game, tying the RU single-game mark. Jenn Everhart homered in that game.
Shannon Keefe had three hits, including a homer, and four RBIs in the second game.
No. 18 Virginia Tech 6, East Tennessee State 0
BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Caroline Stolle hit a three-run homer to help the Hokies win the State Line Classic.
Misty Hall had a two-run single for Tech (39-12).
Angela Tincher (28-5) and Kenzie Roark combined on the two-hitter to shut out ETSU (24-29).
Ferrum's Rizzo honored
Ferrum first baseman Lauren Rizzo, whose team was eliminated from the USA South tournament Saturday, has been named to the All-USA South second team.
MEN'S GOLF
Radford finishes 3rd
GREENWOOD, S.C. -- Radford finished third at the Big South championships with an 891.
Coastal Carolina won its fifth straight crown with an 874. Charleston Southern was second at 890.
Radford's Nick Little and Chris Dillow tied for sixth at 222.
Dillow (Bland) earned a spot on the All-Big South team with his performance. Little and RU's Hampton Ballard had previously made the team because of their regular-season play.
BASEBALL
Virginia Tech 5, Radford 4
BLACKSBURG -- The Hokies (18-23) scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to rally past the Highlanders.
VMI transfer Klint Reed drove in the tying run with a sacrifice fly, and Austin Wates knocked in the winning run with another sacrifice fly.
Radford (16-23) had two runners on in the ninth, but reliever Rhett Ballard struck out Alex Gregory and retired Nate Toth on a grounder to end the game.
Ben Toth had a two-RBI double for Radford.
The game had been scheduled for Pulaski but was moved to Tech because rain in recent days rendered Calfee Park unplayable.
Coppin State 8, VMI 5
LEXINGTON -- Oscar Santalo homered twice to help the Eagles (3-40) snap a 30-game losing streak.
Tanner Biagini of VMI (20-20) hit a two-run shot in the ninth to cut the lead to 8-5.
No. 16 Virginia 9, Georgetown 1
CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Dan Grovatt had four hits and three RBIs to lead the Cavaliers (32-11) to a win over the Hoyas (14-24).
Ferrum players honored
Ferrum catcher Nick Baker (William Byrd), whose team was eliminated from the USA South tournament with a 19-7 loss to Christopher Newport on Saturday, has been named to the All-USA South first team.
Third baseman Eric Harrell (Fieldale-Collinsville) was a second-team pick.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
W&L promotes Ishida
LEXINGTON -- After steering top-ranked Washington and Lee to a 21-0 record, coach Eric Ishida has had the interim tag removed from his job.
Ishida, whose team will compete in the ODAC championships this weekend, had been the interim coach since August.
WOMEN'S TRACK
Webb, France honored
Washington and Lee's Elizabeth Webb, who broke the ODAC championship records in the 1,500 and 800 last weekend, has been named the ODAC scholar-athlete of the year.
W&L's Nate Hoey, whose team finished second at the meet, was named the coach of the year.
Roanoke College's Tiffany France was chosen co-rookie of the year.
DRAG RACING
Hagan triumphs
Matt Hagan of Christiansburg earned his first win in a national event last weekend at the IRHA Spring Nationals Knoll Gas Nitro Jam at Rockingham (N.C.) Dragway.
Hagan, 25, won the Nitro Funny Car Class final.
Hagan is in his third season of national IHRA competition but his first in that class. He previously competed in the Pro Modified division.
