Tincher 3rd all time in K's

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- A five-run second inning erased a three-run deficit as the Virginia Tech softball team rallied for an 8-3 win over Maryland on Sunday.

In the third inning, Angela Tincher struck out Brianna Shaw to move into third place all-time in NCAA history for career strikeouts. She finished with 18 punchouts and now sits with 1,784 for her career, trailing just Monica Abbott and Cat Osterman.

She went the distance, allowing three runs on three hits and five walks.

The Hokies (25-10, 7-2 ACC) busted out for nine hits in the game, led by two from Charisse Mariconda and Jessica Everhart.

Virginia 8, N.C. State 7

CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Virginia scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on an N.C. State throwing error to beat the Wolfpack.

Lauren McCaskey led UVa (11-23, 4-5 ACC), going 3-for-4 with a double and two singles.

Roanoke 6-12, Randolph-Macon 1-9

ASHLAND, Va. -- Randolph-Macon (17-5, 2-2 ODAC) had its 16-game winning streak snapped by Roanoke (21-6, 6-2).

Loren Messick was 2-for-4 and scored two runs in the first game for the Maroons. Hillary Hudgins went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and scored two runs in the second contest.

BASEBALL

Virginia 2, Va. Tech 1

CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Dan Grovatt delivered a bases-loaded single in the sixth inning that plated Jarrett Parker with the go-ahead run in a victory by 15th-ranked Virginia (23-5, 8-4 ACC) over Virginia Tech (8-18, 0-12).

Radford 12, Charleston Southern 8

RADFORD -- Ben Toth led the Highlanders (15-10, 2-1 Big South), going a perfect 2-for-2, including a two-run double that accounted for half of the junior's career-high four RBIs in the game.

Shenandoah 15, Ferrum 3, 8 innings

WINCHESTER, Va. -- D.J. Phillips paced Ferrum (7-13, 2-8 USA South), going 3-for-4 with a double and scored a run.

Winthrop 4, VMI 0

LEXINGTON -- Three Winthrop (11-16, 2-1 Big South) hurlers combined for the shutout, as southpaw starter Ryan Mullins (2-0) went six-plus innings, allowing only three hits and a walk while striking out four.

The Keydets (10-15, 4-2 Big South) posted five hits off of Matteo D'Angelo through his 2 13 innings, before Josh McDonald came on to induce a game-ending double play.

VMI starter Chris Henderson (3-3) struck out a career-best 11 batters without issuing a walk.

MEN'S LACROSSE

Roanoke 11, Whittier 5

Matt Quinton led all scorers with three goals and an assist for No. 13 Roanoke (5-3) in the victory over the Poets (3-3).

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Ohio State 12, Va. Tech 9

BLACKSBURG -- Kady McBrearty, Allie Emala and Rachel Culp had two goals apiece for the Hokies (2-11) in the loss to No. 22 Ohio State (7-3), while Culp also dished out an assist and led the team with three points.

W&L 13, R-MC 7

ASHLAND, Va. -- Britten Mathews notched three goals and two assists to lead No. 8 Washington and Lee (11-1, 4-0 ODAC) to a victory over Randolph-Macon (3-6, 3-1).

CNU 15, Ferrum 1

FERRUM -- Stephanie Perih scored for the Panthers (2-6) in the loss.

WOMEN'S GOLF

Virginia places 6th

BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. -- No. 24 Virginia finished in a three-way tie for sixth place at the Bryan National Collegiate.

The Cavaliers shot 312 during the final round to finish the 54-hole event at 919. The Cavaliers were tied with No. 15 Wake Forest and No. 20 Michigan State.

MEN'S GOLF

Hokies finish 6th

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Hokies shot a three-day total of 26-over 890 to place sixth at the Furman Intercollegiate.

Drew Weaver tied for 20th with a seven-over 223 total.

James leads W&L

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- Washington and Lee shot a third-round 320 to finish with a 907 at the Marine Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate.

Team placing information was unavailable. The Generals were led by senior Nathaniel James, who carded a 69-74-77--220.

MEN'S SWIMMING

Copeland takes fourth

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- Rockbridge County grad William Copeland of California finished fourth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 42.49 seconds Saturday night at the NCAA Division I championships.

Copeland also was part of the third-place 400 freestyle relay team. He earned All-America honors in two individual events and four relays.

Cal finished fourth. Arizona won. Virginia finished 15th.

UVa's John Snawerdt took eighth in the 1,650 freestyle to earn All-America honors. Earning All-America honorable mention were P.J. Sullivan, who was 12th in the 200 breaststroke; Pat Reams, who was 15th in the 200 butterfly; and Lee Robertson, who was 16th in the 200 butterfly.
