Hokies top JMU in baseball slugfest

HARRISONBURG -- Anthony Sosnockie went 4-for-6 with three RBIs as the Virginia Tech baseball team defeated James Madison 18-11 on Tuesday.

Michael Seaborn went 2-for-4 with five RBIs for the Hokies (8-15), who blew things open with a six-run ninth.

Virginia 5, VCU 3

CHARLOTTESVILLE -- The Cavaliers got three RBIs from Dan Grovatt and five strong innings from Jake Cowan to extend their school-record home winning streak to 18 games.

Radford 8, Charlotte 5

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Tyren Rivers had four hits and scored three runs as the Highlanders knocked off the 49ers (17-3), who are ranked No. 23 in the Collegiate Baseball poll.

Alex Gregory and Reggie Keen each had two RBIs for Radford (12-9).

Ferrum 13, SVU 12

FERRUM -- Travis Crump went 5-for-5, and Nick Baker had four hits and four RBIs as the Panthers (6-11) scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to top the visiting Knights (7-12). Greg Larson and Derek Snider each had three hits to lead Southern Virginia.

VMI 9, Wm. and Mary 8

LEXINGTON -- Rockbridge County graduate Brian Sandridge hit a grand slam in a six-run third inning and the Keydets (9-12) won their fifth straight.

Bridgewater 9, W&L 3

LEXINGTON -- Aaron Read's two-run single in the top of the eighth broke a tie and the Eagles won on the road.

SOFTBALL

Tincher recognized

Virginia Tech pitcher Angela Tincher, whose squad will face the U.S. national team today, has been named the USA Softball national collegiate player of the week.

The James River graduate went 4-0 with 58 strikeouts and a no-hitter last week, allowing no runs and eight hits in 24 23 innings.

The Hokies will face the U.S. national team at 7:30 tonight in Oklahoma City; the taped broadcast will air on May 7 on ESPN2.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING

Generals honored

Washington and Lee junior Lindsay Strachan has been named the ODAC swimmer of the year, while W&L's Tess Hayden was chosen rookie of the year.

W&L's Amy Roberson was voted scholar-athlete of the year for the second time.

Strachan won the 100- and 200-yard backstroke at the ODAC championships and was part of two winning relay teams. Hayden won the 200- and 1,650-yard freestyle at the ODAC meet and was also part of two winning relay teams.

Nine Generals earned All-ODAC honors.

Men's Lacrosse

Middlebury 15, W&L 10

LEXINGTON -- Mike Stone scored five goals as the seventh-ranked Panthers (5-0) topped the Generals (4-4).

Women's Lacrosse

W&L 14, Middlebury 8

LEXINGTON -- Christine Bender scored five goals as the eighth-ranked Generals (9-1) defeated No. 3 Middlebury (3-1).

Sweet Briar 16, Ferrum 6

FERRUM -- Stewart Hulfish scored six goals and Meredit Newman had five as Sweet Briar won on the road.
